19-year-old Tomek whiles away his lonely life by spying on his opposite neighbour Magda through binoculars. She's an artist in her mid-thirties, and appears to have everything - not least a constant stream of men at her beck and call. Everything about this movie suggest the work of a pretentious young man who thinks his work is deep and moving. This was my first Kieslowski film, but if his other movies are anything like this, I'll be giving them a pass. Our main character is Tomek, a creepy stalker whose mind seems not to have matured any further than the age of 12. We watch him spy on an older woman who's become jaded and views love as synonymous with sex. He harasses her constantly in the innocent and futile hope of getting her to talk to him. Eventually, he gets his wish and she falls completely head-over-heels for him. The whole thing is extremely unrealistic, and suggested to me that the director is a real insecure guy. The whole story and script play out like an personal sob-story of "Why don't girls like me? I'm such a nice guy! I'm kind and gentle and all they ever do is go out with jerks who give them sex!"I'm kind of shocked how everyone fell under the director's spell here. Everyone in the reviews here is gushing about how this film is a wonderful portrayal of love. Love? Where's the love? Certainly not from Tomek. The argument could be made that his love is pure because he is pure of heart, but this isn't at all the impression I got from the film. He's obsessive, creepy, and honestly a bit scary. His "love" is clearly an infatuation, and is entirely baseless. He doesn't know this woman, and has only observed her through subversive sexual acts. The scene in which he asks his mother why people cry is laughable, and the scene in which he slits his wrists is completely unbelievable. Why did he do that? He was embarrassed that he splooged in his pants? Big deal. It's an insult to people who struggle with thoughts of suicide. So what's the message here? "Love is more than sex!!!!!!!!!"? Yeah, well, obviously. Of course it is, and more than that love is certainly not how it's portrayed in this movie. The complexities and subtleties of love are not at all explored, rather the director wanks off in shots he thinks are deep and moving and poetic. Just because something is slow-moving, often silent, and utilizes an emotional violin soundtrack doesn't mean it's meaningful.Huge disappointment.

Krzysztof Kieslowski is a Polish director most known for directing the three colors trilogy. His 1988 movie 'A Short Film About Love' aka 'Krótki film o milosci' is, as its name implicates, a short (with a duration of c. 80 minutes) film about love. With a catchy title like that, one may expect A Short Film About Love to be a predictable romantic comedy. Well, A Short Film About Love is as far from comedy as possible - in fact it is somewhat depressing. I'm also not sure if I would label this movie as 'romantic'. I'll let you decide that. The movie is about Tomek (Olaf Lubaszenko), a 19 year old who works at the post office. He is obsessed with his older neighbor Magda (Grazyna Szapolowska) who lives in the tower block opposite. He regularly spies on her through a telescope he stole, he even calls her on the telephone and tries to contact her in any way possible. One day he decides to confess his actions to her. As you can see, the plot itself is very simple and thin. However, it is really effective and works amazingly good. This unusual combination of Hitchcockian vibes and 'romance' really appealed to me.As you may have guessed from the movie's plot, A Short Film About Love is a rather slow movie, there isn't much drama to it. The movie benefits mostly from the haunting and gloomy surroundings in which the characters interact. Furthermore, the performances in the movie are absolutely great and very powerful. Olaf Lubaszenko is excellent in his minimalist portrayal of the love-stricken, creepy Tomek, and Grazyna Szapolowska's portrayal of the promiscuous artist Magda is also note worthy. Besides these two, there aren't many other prominent characters in the movie. Of course, there's the old lady in whose house Tomek lives (played by Stefania Iwinska) but she isn't that important for the overall story. Olaf Lubaszenko and Grazyna Szapolowska are the ones that keep the movie going.A Short Film About Love really keeps pushing the boundaries of fictional love. It asks questions such as - What is truly love? Does it even exist? What does it take to be in love? How do we know we're in love? It analyzes how one person's actions affect another one's life and how to deal with the consequences of your actions. A Short Film About Love is a dark and bold journey into the human psyche and into the complicated emotion that is love. A definitive recommendation!Rating: 8/10 Read more at http://passpopcorn.wordpress.com/

Nowadays love stories involve a traditional trajectory of boy meets girl and then moves on to "important" events or dates so finding this is like stumbling upon the needle in the haystack(no negative connotation intended). This movie manages to look past all the bs and straight to the point, raw love, building your life around it, and risking it all for it. Nowadays the protagonist would probably get labeled as "stalker" because that's probably how we've been raised to see these things. What i loved about this film is how is its attempt(which i think is successful) at destroying this correlation between love and sex. The Krzystof Kieslowski is no random director, and although the shots themselves are nothing spectacular, the way the movie flows together is and the music used matches the tone perfectly. The acting is spectacular, the main two characters are really believable and you really feel them develop. Though this movie is easy to recommend to everyone(who is of age), i would say only those with an open mind will be able to extract meaning from it.

"A short film about Love" (Dekalog Six) is a movie which can be best described as "A guy , a girl and a telescope but not in that order" (Courtesy :Jean Luc Godard). This movie is one of the best movies ever made ,describes the emotional storms in the teens , the hopeless promiscuity of a middle aged woman , the apparent peculiarity called love , all in a nutshell , just in a span of one hour. Tomek , a 19 year old boy , spies on his middle aged neighbor Magda , who is an artiste by profession . Tomek's friend goes abroad giving him the telescope to spy on "promiscuous" Magda with the suggestion "She spreads it around". Tomek , like any confused teen fails to express his love in the proper way and in turn gets hurt in love .Magda introduces him to her very own world of physical pleasure without any presence of the emotions Tomek possess. Kieslowski introduces the viewer to a brutal world marked with absence of love. The movie begins depicting Tomek's attraction towards Magda , his moist eyes finding a man on Magda's flat with his telescope and the movie finishes focusing on Magda ,her understanding of love , perhaps in the same language Tomek wanted to tell her. The uniqueness of the movie lies in the last scene. Tomek declares to Magda , that he's not spying on her anymore . Magda is surprised at first , apprehends it as Tomek doesn't love her anymore , but the next moment she smiles softly , reassuring herself about the strength of love she came to know in her life. This movie , Kielowski's masterpiece is worth to watch , with brilliant acting from Grazyna Szapolowska and Olaf Lubaszenko. The scenes of Tomek and Magda meeting in a restaurant , or when Magda introduces Tomek to her body , or Magda's loneliness and her painful and patient wait for Tomek to get back from hospital are classic examples of movie making and are more poetic than other practical elements in the movie. In short, this movie can be described as a must watch for any lover of movie making and any person ever in love .
