Paper Heart is a semi-fictional film that follows Charlyne Yi who doesn't believe in love, or so she thought. At the least, she does not believe in a Hollywood romance ending type of love or that of a fairy-tale. But it is clear that love is something she really wants but she remains a skeptic. This is until she meets Mike (Michael Cera) and falls in love with him whilst making a documentary about love with director Nicholas Jasenovec (Jake Johnson) They both search for answers to the question "Does true love really exist?" They ask, a romance novelist, children, judges, couples, strangers, scientists and bikers who share their true love stories.Charlyne is at first skeptical of her love for Michael, we see their relationship unfold on camera, her skepticism and search for the answer puts their relationship at jeopardy, however she soon realizes the answer lies within her own heart. It's a very cute, humorous and sweet documentary-style film that supports the notion of true love, although presents love and relationships as being tricky and that they require a lot of work. The message is that love is sometimes simple but relationships need work and to be built upon for that love to truly blossom. The ending concludes nicely with Charlyene concluding on love; she says that love is about risk taking, if you don't take the risks, you can miss out on it. It is clear all throughout the film she took risks, by going out with Michael although she believed he did not have interest in her and more importantly by Going to Michael's house in Toronto and by doing so she rekindles their love.Scenes in the film are done with paper to show the stories of the couples who are in love,it ends with an exaggerated version of Michael and Charlyene's giving it the Hollywood romance ending she first rejected. This film shows the beauty of love and will truly melt your heart.

This was a very clever film and it was funny, entertaining and a little sad all in one. There are a lot of cameos of people just playing themselves. I think just the guy filming it was not playing himself. It was filmed in a documentary style and for awhile you think it is all real. Charlyne Yi is the star that thinks she will never fall in love or even feel it. There are parts when you can really see how she is feeling and she is a joy to watch. Michael Cera plays the guy she starts to like. He uses the same type of comedy you usually see him use in other movies he is in. The director is played by Jake Johnson; the only guy not playing himself. He was an interesting character to add. He shows he felt for the main character, being her friend. But he really wanted to end the movie. We have all felt like Charlyne sometimes. I know I have. That is why I had a connection to this film. So I think this film can only connect to certain audiences. There were some very interesting hand made scenes in the film with paper and other things. That was a nice little art style to add. I was enjoying this film all the way until the end. I will not ruin it, but I will say it was not what I wanted and I think it was a really bad move on their part to end it that way. But overall, a charming movie with a great cast of actors just playing themselves.

This movie is entertaining and probably one of the least obnoxious movies I've seen in a long time. The plot centers around innocence and the meaning behind "love", not "Love" -- in other words it was trying to define the term as the movie plays out, instead of assuming what the love interest ("Love") is and allowing the characters to play along. Another thing that made this movie refreshing is that in the beginning the main character was along for the ride as a passenger, and often does some back-seat driving, complaining about the fact that the camera is watching her every move. But as the plot starts to force her to take the wheel, she finds she cannot drive. This is what causes the pinnacle of the movie, when she cannot tell Michael that she loves her, when it is obvious that she does. This discovery of self is what makes the movie interesting -- we discover her as she discovers herself. The writing was fresh, especially since the move took place withing the guise as a documentary. I enjoyed that the director allows us to see behind the movie making facade, and we even see the camera men get in the action occasionally. The interviews with long-time couples kept the fact that this was supposed to be a documentary believable. Also that the actors names were not disguised (although the director was for some reason). Now that I think about it, that makes sense since the move becomes reality only for Charlyne and Michael.Although Charlyne is cute and real, there are some points where I would have liked to see some real acting to keep the documentary aspect a bit more believable. She sometimes has a look on her face of "what am I doing here" and I'm afraid it makes the movie at times lose it's momentum. The vignettes with the paper puppets (or whatever you would call them) are cute and act well to divide the plot up. The last one is perfect for this movie -- Charlyne has gotten herself into a mess she doesn't know how to get out of and must raise herself to a point of toughness where she can even take on the police department. Then in an act of final valor, she pulls Michael along with her for the ride. Charlyne had had moments when she stood up for herself, but the ending summarizes her journey of discovery and validates that she understands that to consummate love sometimes requires a bit of selfishness.I wouldn't underplay Michael's role because he was fantastic in the movie, but this is mostly about Charlyne's journey. Unpredictable most of the time, "quirky" almost to a fault, but with a solid movement towards this climax, this movie is a nice counter play to most of the formula plots in current love story movies.

Charlene Yi a writer & comic actress co-wrote this documentary style film on the meaning of love.Nicholas Jasenovic directed & is the other co-writer.It had a short run on about 50 screens late summer 2009.Seeing it on DVD this evening, I did enjoy it BUT would have been disappointed if I saw it in a 'multi-plex'. Years back films of this nature would have been on the lower half of a double bill or had Vaudeville skits with it.It is nice & pleasant,. she travels around the country asking various peoples if they have ever found true love.Micheal Cera a promising new actor is featured as himself, he & Charlene did have a romance during the filming. The 2 of them wrote much of the music, it too is pleasant. Very good camera work & nice setting. This is a worthwhile minor rental. You may not love it BUT you definitely wont hate itRatings: *** (out of 4) 81 points out of 100) IMDb 7 (out of 10)
