You know when you're on some wilderness trip, out of your element, and all these crazy, far flung 'what if' scenarios enter your head, but they never happen? In A Lonely Place To Die, one of them does, to hapless hiker Melissa George and her friends. Traversing the Scottish highlands, the group hears an eerie crying coming from a random ventilation pipe in a remote area, and unwisely digs below ground to investigate. Imprisoned in a seriously creepy bunker is a young Eastern European girl, alone and afraid. So begins their waking nightmare trying to find out where she came from, pursued by all kinds of nasties and forced to kill or be killed to protect her. There's a horde of British thugs including resident creeper Sean Harris, a faction of powerful Russian spooks led by intense Karel Roden, and all manner of psychos adding to the hubbub. As a breathless chase thriller it works wonders, with more than a few impeccably stages set pieces that orchestrate suspense well. There's violence too, as Melissa is forced to dispatch the heinous baddies in terrifically gory ways, and fighting tooth and nail to protect the girl. The plot moves in a familiar direction as far as her backstory goes and loses momentum in resolution, but they had to wrap it up logically I suppose. The film is best when it goes full on crazy, and gets into borderline horror mode, it's got a loopy sense of violence about it that is the strongest quality.
... View MoreWhat is this new trend where movies end badly? Am I Old World to think some of the leads should live? Should we just wait it out, or I would like a subtle warning that everyone dies in the end. Very sad now after watching my last film. I had a different ending in mind. Damn you, producers, I am sure you feel smug and happy. Were you amused to give us a great story and then have it end badly? I would like to see the faces on your paying customers as they left the theaters. It was beautifully filmed, well acted, but I am sorry for it. Not a good review, is it? I will remember the Gilbey name to avoid in the future.
... View MoreIf you like action thrillers, can cope with some small logical "errors" (the kind most action thrillers have) and want something a little off the beaten track when it comes to setting, this movie is for you. Eight points for keeping the tension pretty high for almost the entire movie, yet not being too shallow. Acting is decent without any embarrassments. We also have a few beautiful Scottish landscape shots and some neat stunt work to round it off. Surely not the most artistic piece of film, but I really had a good time watching it. Maybe I would have given it only seven points, if I didn't think it was kind of underrated here on IMDb with a current average of six points.
... View MoreI usually dismiss small stuff like bad decision making and improbability when it's in small doses. I mean they are movies after all. BUT, this film is totally ridiculous. From repelling down a sheer-face-cliff with half the rope to reach the bottom, to not crossing a not-so-fast river, and not being able to hear someone 15 yards away, because of the 'fast-rushing-water'. It's truly absurd more often than it's not.THere are endless examples of this garbage in this flick, and the rest of it isn't much better. The acting is average, the story is just dull, the writing is deplorable, and the end-result, is perhaps the worst 6.3 movie I've ever seen.I'd pass. This sat on my netflix q for a few weeks. What a waste of space... and time.It is a very lonely place to die indeed. Pretty boy tumbles down a mountain, bashes into a tree, lands looking like and sounding-like he broke his leg. Gets up only to be running in the next scene and looking like a polo model in the face and clothes. I could go on... I'd rather not. Pass.I had a few good laughs, but I'm pretty sure this is 'supposed' to be a thriller. 43/100
