Voltes V is a Japanese anime television series that was first aired on TV in 1977. It was created by Saburo Yatsude and directed by Tadao Nagahama. It is the second part of the Robot Romance Trilogy of the Super Robot genre which includes Chōdenji Robo Combattler V and Tōshō Daimos. An armada of horned humanoid aliens known as Boazanians invade earth and launch their "beast fighters" all over the world, defeating most of the world's armed forces including the US military. Their first humiliating defeat by Super Electromagnetic Machine, Voltes V brings the invaders to focus their attacks on Japan. Voltes V was designed by Professor Kentaro Gō, his wife Professor Mitsuyo Gō and their trusted colleague, Professor Hamaguchi and built by large scale construction effort backed by United Nations Earth Defense Force and General Oka. Voltes V is a robot composed of five "Volt Machines", and each are themselves formidable weapons. Each machine is piloted by Ken'ichi, Daijiro, and Hiyoshi: the three sons of Kentaro and Mitsuyo Gō, along with the only daughter of General Oka; Megumi, and Ippei Mine, an orphan cowboy.Voltes V's home base is Camp Big Falcon, a fortress situated on a bird- shaped island along the coast of Japan. Voltes V's enemies are the Boazanians; namely Prince Heinell, Katharine, Jangal, and Zuhl. The series focuses on the struggle against the Boazanian invaders, and the Gō brothers' search for their long-lost father, Kentarō Gō. As the series progresses, four major characters—Professor Mitsuyo Gō, Zuhl, General Oka and Professor Hamaguchi—die. Zuhl and Hamaguchi are replaced by Belgan and Professor Sakunji, respectively. Later in the series, the brothers learn of their unique heritage of being half Boazanian. The characters deal with their identity's impact on their own lives and that on both their close friends and bitter enemies.Voltes V narrates the heroic exploits of the young robot pilots known as The Voltes Team and their trials against alien invaders from the planet Boazan. Armed with the Super Electromagnetic Machine Voltes V, the five pilots drive back the invaders one Beast Fighter at a time. The series is different from typical super robot anime of the time in that it illustrates human sentimentality and common values, with underlying themes such as the love of family, equality, selfless sacrifice, team work, and patriotism. It is a work that has a heavy revolutionary undertone. The series ends with Voltes V's spectacular counterattack on planet Boazan to liberate the slaves from the oppression of a tyrannical ruler, Emperor Zu Zambojil. Aliens, robots and melodrama and you have this anime. It is a show about five dramatically different, complementary-talented, and super-tough martial artists who pilot various vehicles. These vehicles are the constituent pieces of a giant alien robot that they use to defend the earth from the tyrants.Overall,it is a classic anime. No doubt about it.

It was so obvious that Voltron DID copied some of the elements in VOLTES V. One of these was ripping-off VOLTES V's name! Voltron Lion Force had an original title. (Go-Lion: King of a Hundred Beasts) When it reached the shores of the U.S.A., the American distributors re-named it VOLTRON as to catch the American viewers' taste. American viewers and fans should be aware that this so-called "Defender of the Universe" took its name from a far more poignant super robot story. It CANNOT be DENIED, the "VOLT" in Voltron's name was the Volt in VOLTES V's name. There are no other super robots in the past, Japanese originals and U.S tampered that had the Volt in the name but Voltes V! In the case of Combattler V ripping-off by Voltes V, let us remember that the creator of Voltes V and Combattler V is only one person (Tadao Nagahama) and Voltes V is CLEARLY the Improvement of Combattler V.Voltes V is one of the best Japanese animated shows I've seen.

They say first love never dies, and it's certainly true for my love for Voltes V. I first watched the series in the mid 80's, the first Japanese anime I've ever seen. I'm still an anime lover, but truly nothing compares to Voltes V. I don't exactly know why, maybe it's the storyline (which gives a surprising secret at the end), maybe it's the characters (one of them is my first crush, the villain was voted the most-loved villain in all anime), or maybe simply because it doesn't use sex as a selling tool like so many anime nowadays. When the story ends, I felt the first disappointment in my whole life. I've moved to many other movies, but still I came back for it, searched for years before finding a complete set of vcds, and surprised myself because I vividly remembered most episodes. That's how much I love it.

Voltes V is the story of three brothers in search for their lost father, while waging a war against a horned race of alien invaders. To fight against the aliens, the three brothers and two friends use five sophisticated attack vehicles which can combine into a powerful laser sword-wielding giant robot. The theme of the series is not for the average kid, storylines about discrimination, racism and dictatorialism has led to this series being banned in one country. But the main theme of siblings going against the odds to be reunited with their father has made this series one of the most popular of the vintage anime. It doesn't hurt also that their mecha (robot) is one of the more advance-designed one.A cult following has ensued in my country. Twenty years after its release, it still hasn't lost its magic. And I for one am thankful for that.
