On the whole, I found this series to be unimpressive at best, annoying at worst. There seems to have been some Italian co-production involved, so that almost half of the episodes are sub-titled which, while it may be authentic, I found annoying. I can cope with the occasional sub-titling of foreign dialog, but it requires me to pay close attention to the text, so that I sometimes miss what is actually happening in a scene. There has been some complaint about the stereotyping of the Italian characters, but this is not confined to the Italians. Getty and the remainder of the American/British characters suffer many similar stereotypes. The flashbacks and flash-forwards are annoying and sometimes disruptive, making the story line that much more difficult to follow. And there are too many characters with sub-plots of their own, cluttering up the production and making it over-long. Do I really need to know the butler's life story? Finally, I was frustrated by the stupidity of many characters, who seem to find it impossible to change their minds or points of view. This may be based on fact (at least in part) but it only serves to make the production that little bit less watchable.

I watched some of the first episode of this series. It's directed by Danny Boyle at his Boyle-iest, and for me that's not a good thing. Sutherland is excellent as the senior Getty, but the series tosses the viewer into its slightly surreal, seriously off-kilter world in a way I found off-putting.I can understand why some people would like this. Weirdness can seem good and bad depending on what you bring to it, and if I like the weirdness of Young Pope more than the weirdness of Trust, it's not because one approach is objectively better but just because certain forms of weirdness appeal to me more. So if you like this I won't argue the point, but for me this just got more and more annoying and gimmicky.

8 reviews thus far, that surprises me. It also doesn't surprise me at all. It is not fast paced, semi-funny, cheap Netflix content, therefore not appreciated. The synopsis is very interesting, the story-line intriguing. The acting rock solid, no-one exempted. Characters al have proper backstories and are interesting from the get go. The pilot had all the ingredients of a great show.

The first episode was a very well balanced blend of action, character development, humor, unpredictability and intensity. Also great scenery, and a nice incorporation of the culture of the 1970's. I have absolutely no idea where this series is going, but it's easy to get invested in the characters - something that is often overlooked in new series.
