Goldie Clemmons (Georgia King) leaves her small Ohio town and cheating baby daddy Clay (Jayson Blair) to start a new life in LA with daughter Shania (Bebe Wood). She becomes a surrogate for gay couple Bryan Collins (Andrew Rannells) and David Sawyer (Justin Bartha) who takes in the single mom. Goldie's anti-gay grandmother Jane (Ellen Barkin) follows her to cause havoc in the new family. Rocky Rhoades (NeNe Leakes) is Bryan's assistant. With the success of Modern Family, Ryan Murphy's attempt to make a gay-centric network sitcom is an obvious move. All the elements are assembled here with the gays taking the lead. It boils down to personal preference whether one likes these characters. Goldie is fine if a little bland. Daughter Shania is a little too wacky without another kid to balance her. David is the 'straight man' while Bryan is the traditional flamboyant gay. There is love in the relationship although I'm not in love with them. Ellen Barkin overpowers the cast. NeNe Leakes kinda annoys me. Overall, this collection of actors and characters stress me out rather than make me laugh. That makes it hard to watch sometimes. It's not a show for me.
... View Morethe only problem is to define it. because it could be perceived as provocative, bizarre, pure gay story. in fact, it is a lovely comedy. maybe an old fashion one. because the use of irony, bitter humor, perfect actors for roles who are reflections of entire universe of relations, family problems, expectations and problems, all around a child, all around a new perspective about family. so, a cute series. and the opportunity to discover new performances from Ellen Barkin. or Justin Bartha.
... View MoreI predict this show to be one of the most popular shows on television by next season. It's got all the in-your-face laughter of Modern Family and the dry, witty humor, as well as the tonnes of celebrity-related jokes, of Will & Grace. The plot is also somewhere in between the two aforementioned shows. The New Normal really lives up to its name. Without trying too hard like some shows, it successfully manages to send the message that there is nothing less normal about this family than any other you can possibly imagine. The only thing lacking in the show till now is character development, apart from Jane, who I think is a great character with a lot of more surprises in store. Other than that, the story is brilliant, the humor is excellent and the cast is impeccable - I mean, you've got the hot Justin Bartha, the hilarious NeNe Leakes, and Bebe Wood, who definitely has a solid future in acting, what more could one possibly ask for?Give it a try, you won't be disappointed, it's one of the better comedies at the moment.
... View MoreI usually wait 3-4 episodes before deciding if I'm gonna keep watching a show or not. After 3 episodes of this show it's kinda safe to say that it's not gonna survive long. You look at shows like modern family, HIMYM, happy endings or The big bang theory and you know they give material for 6-7 seasons at least. But this is not the case here. Clearly, they wanted to make a show centered around a gay couple and make them look "normal" and put typical non-creative characters on the sides. The grandmother, the daughter and the little kid are all what you have already seen like bizillion times. you can even predict what they gonna do every scene. The grandmother will say something racist or sexist.. anything offensive. The daughter will give the warm innocent look and act as an angel. The little girl will go "the world doesn't understand me". The whole this is very predictable. I could tel in the end of the pilot what's gonna happen next episode and so on! We all have gay friends and we see how they live and behave, you don't have to go to the extreme and make them weird then say "normal". Most of gay people don't do what Andrew does in this show and if they do, I highly doubt this would be normal any soon. I don't hate the show but I watch it like "yea, keep going".. I'm not very excited to watch anyway. I think if you want the massage you better watch community (the anti-racist/sexist) show. If you want the comedy, you have tons of shows to make you laugh your ass but not this one.
