I've put spoilers because I was disappointed with the finale although I think I understand it was trying to make a social and political point to what does happen or at least can happen in the American justice system. I personally like to see a definitive and where possible happy and positive ending but this is not and no justice is served. That all been said some of the acting in this show is outstanding. Fish is fantastic and it has to be said the baddies are first class actors also. It does start slowly but by epsidoe 4 I was gripped. Definitely worth watching on Netflix and would be interested to read what others thought of the ending.
... View MoreIf you want a complete recap of series this is not the review for you. I'm just going to mention what I liked and what I did not like. Also, spoilers ahead!Liked: Good, if not completely original premise. I really liked some of the acting. Standouts for me were Isiah, Latrice, Fish, and Hennessy. I did not like the actress playing KJ so much. And pretty much all the other cops except Jablonski were not so hot IMO. The writing, in places, was pretty good as well.Did Not Like: Too long! Did not need to be 10 episodes. Did there need to be the little subplots about KJ and her boss or Beton and Kedeuce? Personally I don't think they added a whole lot. Yes, in the case of Benton it shows his parents didn't really know him. KJ and boss was total filler and not very interesting filler at that. Here's something I didn't get at all: Fish lived in presumably Jersey City. Nadine went to school in Jersey City. So far, so good. To keep Nadine out of harm's way Fish has her stay with his ex-wife on Long Island. One of his conditions for Nadine to stay with Fish's ex-wife is for Nadine to volunteer at a dog kennel, which Fish said he give her directions to. OK, again, so far, so good. HOWEVER: Is it plausible that Nadine would escape the rehab in Jersey CIty and go all the way back to Long Island to get the dog whiskey? You'd think she would've been intercepted somewhere along the way. On the off chance the kennel was in Jersey City area, would Fish really trust Nadine to commute all the way from the Island to Jersey City to volunteer? Either way it makes no sense. I'm sure there are other plot holes as well. The one I listed was really bothering me, though. In the right hands, with a tighter script, better acting and few episodes/less filler, this could have been a really good series.
... View MoreI binge watched the show and although I appreciate the message it appeared to be sending, there were too many things that affected the credibility of the show and therefore my enjoyment of it. First of all, as one familiar with the criminal justice system, there were too many times proper procedures were not followed, or ignored. For example, if the DA has the key witness for grand jury testimony, one who your entire case rests on, you guard against any possible event that will prevent the witness from testifying. Take Naomi. To have her in a youth center holding, even though ordered by child protective services, is absurd. You get a protection order from the grand jury and have her under lock and key until she testifies. Another bothersome detail was that it was concluded that she died of a self-induced heroin overdose, but later, Fish references one of the accused cops having scratch marks on his arms. If you suspect that, you get DNA samples from Naomi's fingernails to indicate that it might have been a forced overdose which raises the question of foul play by the dirty cops who would benefit from her "going away". There were just too many forced plot twists to mention that harmed the prosecution that could have been avoided. And finally, the trial was unrealistic from a legal standpoint. As an attorney, I was objecting on every question and found most of the trial scenes to be nearly laughable. I know it's necessary to try to condense a trial to a couple of episodes, but a trial of that magnitude and community importance would have lasted weeks, if not months. It also struck me that there was a similarity in some scenes that seemed to be taken right out of "The Wire", which in my mind was the most realistic depiction of urban struggle between the street drug life versus the police/legal/political machine.
... View MoreThis show centers on one story line projected from various views depending on who's demographic you belong to. I have to say I love these types of shows if for no other reason than it is not typical Hollywood happy ending. So you may not be happy with the justice in this show but then that is life. It's not fair. This show has some really outstanding acting by all involved so it's hard to point out anyone in particular as it would not be fair. Strong performances all round. The story centers on the life a of young black boy who is accidentally hit by a policeman on an icy road and then the many lives this act will destroy. For me the 7 seconds is in the act of how the accident came to happen and then how those 7 seconds spiraled into the thread of those who are touched by this act.
