Interesting premise at the beginning. A young boy wakes up in rural China 32 years after he died in the US. Everyone wants to know why. But I want to know how. I'm half way through season 2 and not a single theory has surfaced yet. Was it aliens? Secret government experiments? A result of evolution, global warming, or chlorine in the water? Or could it be a twisted version of the fulfillment of biblical prophecy when the dead are raised ushering in the apocalypse? Why are none of the characters in this series curious enough to get the bottom of what could become an unmanageable crisis or the greatest discovery in human history?

We were interested in this series until religion started playing a bigger part in this. We've stopped watching, the pastor character with his hillbilly preaching and praying was just too much to stomach. :P If the show had stuck with the same story line as it did in the very beginning, just slightly giving an inclination that it could have something to do with God or aliens, then maybe we would think it was a good enough show to continue watching. We are avid fans of sci-fi and that is why we started watching this series. My husband and I feel this series has strayed from the sci-fi. We would love for this series to return to just sci-fi, it was a good show in the beginning.

As everyone knows, this is a remake of the french TV series "Les Revenants". The original show starts a little slow and doesn't have near the budget that the US remake does but the two shows are simply night and day in terms of quality television. I won't go into details since I want this review to be spoiler free but if you haven't watched the original french show, do yourself a huge favor and watch it (it's on Netflix). The US version just has poor acting and poor writing to say the least. It appeals to the lowest common denominator which seems like the major network's M.O. in today's world. It makes sure to check off all of it's typical casting requirement boxes even though those casting choices are simply put... horrible. The entire story and the character development lose so much in the translation that the show is a vague shadowy reflection of the original. Like most network TV nowadays this show has no soul, no intellect and lacks any real emotional connection.

This is a very intriguing show; the plot is advanced just enough each episode to keep you interested while maintaining the mystery. That is not an easy balance to maintain. Frances Fisher and Kurtwood Smith are superb as the two parents who lost their son and have now regained him again. There are a couple of false notes; I would expect people to have a much stronger reaction to the return of not one but 3 dead people. Frankly, the whole town should be going berserk. How does this happen without throngs of media and onlookers descending on the town? Also, if Agent Bellamy is ICE, why is he allowed to stay around the town for an apparent indefinite period of town? These are minor distractions from an otherwise excellent show.
