It's one of the greatest shows. Toby Stephens as Captain Flint/James McGraw is just absolutely BRILLIANT. Don't be put off by the first episode and all the sex. The show has much, much more to offer than just sex and nudity. If you love a good story, clever dialogue, great acting, beautiful music whatch it already. You will not be dissapointed. The only reason why I didn't warch this sooner is entirely due to seeing Michael Bay's name on the producer's credit, to which is certainly an unfair but not entirely unreasonable prejudice on my part. Simply put, Black Sails far exceed my hopes and expectations, rekindling the long forgotten promise of danger, treasure and adventure. To say Black Sails is a fictional prequel to Treasure Island does not do it justice. Black Sails showcases the golden age of pirates in all it's brutal, untinted glory.Robert Levine and John Steinberg manages to craft a compelling and believable account of the pirates of this caribbean, slowly revealing the motivations of each of the players, the depths they are willing to go to to achieve it, the price they pay for the path they have chosen. Toby Stephens is impeccable as James Flint, the troubled Captain of the most notorious pirate crew in Nassau. Special commendation must also be given to Zach McGowan and Luke Arnold. McGowan as the brutal and ruthless Captain Charles Vane who being an American, his British accent and deep rumbling voice really makes the character menacing. Arnold plays John Silver, as in, the Long John Silver, with some panache, charm and skill. Other notable players include Hannah New as Eleanor Guthrie, the crafty madam boss of Nassau, Jessica Parker Kennedy as Max, the clever madam whore whose seduces her way to the top, and Tom Hooper as the loyal imposing Billy Bones. This show could have been absolutely fantastic. And actually some of it is... especially seasons 2 and 3. But then they stall alot with conversations that have no real importance or meaning, and dont really seem to add anything to the characters. At the start, this is intriguing, to get a sense of the world, but as the series progress, I really started losing patience with all these stalling, undramatic conversations. And once we reach season 4, they really seem to struggle to prolong the drama, and characters start making decisions, which do not seem logical to their siturations and temper, in order to keep the drama going. The show becomes increasingly uninteresting and the drama lacks flow. Too bad, for a show with alot of potential.

I've watched so many TV series. And Black Sails is among th best when compared to Gane of Thrones, Breaking Bad, Westworld, Outlander, etc.The acting is top notch.The directing is top notch.The character development, especially of Captain Flint and Long John Silver, is top notch.The only negative thing I could say about Black Sails is that there are only 4 seasons, and I wish there are 30 seasons of it. That is how awesome this series is. Black Sails makes the Pirates of the Caribbean movies look like preschool cartoons. Black Sails is unequivocally among the best TV series.
