I'm amazed that this series has scored a 6.6 on the IMDb chart. The idea was good, manic depressive psychiatrist tries to not only keep her own life together, but help others. I'm still not sure what it is that turned this show into a debacle. It didn't seem to be going anywhere, no real storyline to follow. I felt little sympathy for her, her portrayal of a manic depressive was a bit hollow. I've seen her in a couple of other things and she was OK, I didn't like her in this though. Can't really blame it on her though. The rot went deeper than that. The first few episodes left me with a little bit of hope, but then it took a nose dive into ridiculousness. The writers? The director? Were they medicated or something themselves? Whatever happened to this show, I hope it goes to the Davy Jones' locker of bad film and sinks into oblivion never to rear it's dreadful head again.

First off, I really liked the show. I liked it enough that I bought the whole season on iTunes after watching the free first episode. It was a little bit like "Homeland" (early on) but set in a cutting edge medical facility instead of a world full of spies and terrorists. However, in the last few episodes, there was a story arc underway that was never finished. The main character, after seeming to be on a solid track to recovering from her public meltdown, is hit with two surprises..... one of them at the very end of the show. The first surprise hits at about the 1/3 mark of the episode and it is left with one of those "this will get better in time" sort of vibes. The last one, the writers set you up for, lulling you into a sense that this problem has been completely resolved and that her career will withstand this, only to drop a bomb on you with the closing sentence of dialogue. Why is this frustrating? Well, because it was a damn good show. Great acting all around (an interesting observation; although set & filmed in NYC, almost none of the stars were from the US). The main characters were well-developed and almost all of them had a fairly deep backstory. The show tackled an issue which is not studied in-depth on most shows (mental illness). All the main characters were capable of great & magnificent things (in their own way) yet every single one also had feet of clay. While some of the story lines were a bit of a stretch, they were more plausible than most episodes of "House" and the similar cases were presented more accurately and the solutions were more medically sound.Well, if you don't mind being left hanging in the end and you are not bothered by a dark look into mental health issues, I highly recommend this show. It just is really frustrating when a show is canceled because of rating but it has been scheduled at an unusual time of year (the pilot ran in late April) and has been under-advertised. It almost makes you wonder why the network even bothered airing the program at all.... just let the production company shop it to another network like FX, TNT, etc.

This is one of my favorite shows of all time.It is fun, thoughtful, smart, educational all in one. The brain is the most powerful organ and this show delves into many fascinating conditions about the brain in a thoughtful, yet entertaining way.It blends fascinating brain conditions, exciting technology, interesting, flawed characters we end up caring about, and an underlying message that your brain matters. It helps to decrease stigma about mental illness and give alternative explanations for why people do what they do, instead of canned answers, such as this person just chose to be bad. I am a huge fan and if you have a brain you could be too. My favorite episodes are the ones about spirituality and music.

Absolutely LOVE The Black Box. It is a truly wonderful and informative show. The commercials prior to the show's 1st episode states that it is based on actual cases or events. It is refreshing for a show to show that not all people are text book cases where health issues are concerned. I love that it shows times where others sometimes notice changes in people who may not notice the changes within themselves. The Black Box also shows the sincere concern of a doctor who truly wants the best for her patients or potential patients or whomever she comes into contact with in any way. I have also seen on an episode of partial symptoms that I deal with on a frequent basis since sustaining a post concussion syndrome diagnosis some time after a fall on black ice some time ago. This episode left me with some questions that I could then take back to my doctor to possibly help improve my condition. So it is my recommendation that The Black Box continue as anyone who is willing to watch the program may be able to find an episode in which there are findings into problems that viewers may discover what tests were performed for any given symptom and then that viewer in turn may then be able to speak with their doctor if said symptoms were previously disregarded by their doctor or they were previously unfounded by former testing as I have noticed testing done that is sometimes NOT routine testing to discover the problem. AWESOME TROUBLESHOOTING, Dr. Black!
