I agree with many of these reviews. The first season was a refreshing, new take of this simple classic. It was a bit darker, but it was still good. Then season 2 just became all about current political hot topics. Very disappointing for the original story. I enjoy adding new characters to the story, and you have to to make it a series, but I wish they had stayed truer to the characters and the time period.

The lead actress was phenomenal in her portrayal of an orphan who finds a loving home but still has to face the trials, triumphs, disappointments, and challenges of youth. This is a series that will probably appeal more to girls/women than boys/men because women face societal restrictions and prejudice in male-dominated societies. There were situations in this series that reminded me of events in my own life where there was an epiphany that I stored away. I loved nature and books as the young heroine Anne does. Discernment is a gift. This series can serve both as reverie for older women like myself or an awakening of possibilities for girls and young women.

Anne with an e is a masterpiece. It may be quite different from Anne of green gables but there's nothing wrong with it. Since there is more depth to the story and many interesting characters to it. I think it's brillliant. It's well adapted to modern society. It also shows many important issues such as racism, sexism, sexual abuse and bullying. Anne is simply amazing, she's smart, funny, interesting and optimistic but also her character development must be mentioned. I love how they gave more depth do Gil as well I find his and Anne's relationship simply beautiful. Love it, whoever hasn't seen it, has to!

Oh it's a re-imagining alright - but not so much that it loses the essence of the original story completely. It's a li'l dark too, with flashbacks to Anne's suffering at the orphanage, and also the initial ostracism she faces at the hands of adults and children alike. Also, perhaps a bit more modern than L.M. Montgomery would have liked it to be (hint : Aunt Josephine), but I found the changes to be 'ever so nice'. It's a wonderful watch for all ages, not just for folks like me who grew up with the books, but for the younger generation too; this is good literature adapted right.
