Kate Parker (Hilary Swank) is 35 with the perfect husband Evan (Josh Duhamel) and the perfect life. Her life is turned upside down by ALS. One and a half years later, she needs full-time help. She fires her nurse for treating her as a patient and hires Bec Cartwell (Emmy Rossum). Bec's life is a mess. Her best friend is Jill. Wil (Jason Ritter) has a crush on her but she's banging her married professor Liam (Julian McMahon). She's an aspiring singer with stage fright. Kate doesn't fit with her old friends Keely (Ali Larter) and Alyssa (Andrea Savage) anymore. She befriends John (Ernie Hudson) and his wife Marilyn (Loretta Devine) who also has ALS.The first most surprising thing is that Emmy Rossum is funny in this. She's doing Fiona from Shameless and she's good at it. Hilary Swank does her best impression of ALS. Once the comedy gets going, the heart can open up. The stage is set for the tear ducts to flow. I also like that Evan is a character with a couple of levels and Kate has a complicated dueling reaction. Bec's many personal problems are a little too broad. The film piles on her problems too thick. In the end, this is an unabashed tear-jerker and one must submit to the manipulations. Also the title is horrible. I get the meaning but it sounds like a bad self-help chant without knowing the story behind it. A better self-help phrase would be "Someone who sees me". At least, that sounds better.

Hilary Swank plays a great role in this movie, she truly shows the pain and suffering that someone with ALS faces. Although it is just acting, Swank moves you as she shows a struggling pianist that not only has to face a horrible disease, but faces emotional distress emotionally. As Swank's character becomes more sick, Swank must act more and more sickly, moving slower and speaking slower also. This movie pulls on the heartstrings as the fight between Swank's character and the fight with ALS becomes increasingly difficult. The fact that Swank can accurately represent the disease in the movie allows those that do not understand the disease to see the struggles and issues that those that suffer face every day. I enjoyed this movie because it is a serious drama and it made me feel happy, sad, joyous, and thoughtful all at the same time. It was joyous because Kate is enabled to live her life to the fullest and her caretaker, Bec, gets a new look at life. I would recommend this movie because of the great portrayal of Swank. The only thing that was weird was the character of Evan, portrayed by Josh Duhamel, although his character played an important role... he was only visible for the first 20mins of the movie, then his appearances were weird and misplaced. OVERALL: This movie is great for the portrayal of ALS, and Swank played a great role.

Swank again with a very difficult role to pull off, but she has proved time and again that she can do it. It's no different this time around. Getting good support from the other actors (no pun intended), she works magic in this one too, in a very limiting role/character and one everyone can have sympathy and empathy for.Not being able to use your whole body to express emotions or just to plain (inter)act with, is not easy, but something that Swank is doing a fine job with here. Rossums character is more of a wild card, but something that is needed. Someone to do the things Swanks character is not entirely able to do. A drama that is tough to watch, but very well made

In all fairness having watched Intouchables (2011) http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1675434/ watching this movie felt more like a female version of the same storyline. Hilary Swank has done a powerful portrayal of person suffering from ALS and you are almost shocked to see her degenerative condition take shape in her speech and movement, the rest of the cast is also quite good and has done a fair job but besides this the movie it self was more like a documentary with a very shallow story line and not much to offer then provoking a few sentimental thoughts for the characters through the movie. With a very predictable plot and nothing left to imagination I would rate this as a rather mediocre movie and am rather amazed by the high rating it has been getting, the only explanation I have is that it plays well on peoples sentiments and carries popular cast.
