Do you know what you're talking about? No! If you don't LIKE the way somebody looks and behaves that does NOT equal that she or he is a bad actor. To make one thing clear: I also think that Cara and Dane are miscast, but not because they are bad actors (they clearly aren't) but they don't fit the roles. I was an avid Valerian & Laureline reader in the 80's and would have imagined other people in the two lead roles, but that's not even the point. The point is: Cara and Dane are simply too young, and you don't need to know the comic book to find that annoying. Even assuming that mankind has evolved in 400 years and younger people are more developped from early on, this is the wrong kind of a big stretch. They are no agents left with a ship and responsibilities like that. I can't shake the feeling that they were simply cast to appeal to a younger audience. But back to the point: Calling Cara's acting wooden or robotic or neglecting chemistry between the two of them is downright stupid. Portraying Laureline that way was a deliberate choice between Besson and Cara, and you can criticize that decision, but it does not warrant calling her a bad actress. Get your facts right, all you hobbyist reviewers. Cara is not even my type (yes, that's possible), but I was fascinated watching her all the way through BECAUSE she did a great job and has something that keeps your attention. THAT'S what makes a good actor, and not the ability of pulling faces. But the too-young leads are about my main problem with the film. Yes, one could say that the Rihanna setpiece serves no real purpose, but the dance sequence is SO well done in every aspect that it makes up for that.Anyway, this film surpasses all the last Star Wars installments since 1999. Give it a chance. Sit back and enjoy a classic space opera, even when it's not "The Fifth Element". But who compares anyway? It's a film in its own right! rent it, buy the disc, let it earn its budget back so we can have a sequel (there's material enough for 20 sequels) and watch John Goodman's character come back. Nuff said.

My first thought after finishing the movie was, wow that was a dope movie. After thinking about it and rewatching some scenes, my thoughts changed a bit. From the moment I started watching it I could honestly smell the Star Wars influence. But, as everyone else pointed out, the first scenes kind of remind you of Avatar. And the whole subplot? Still Avatar. This obviously isn't a bad thing, I mean these two movies are holy in the eyes of sci-fi writers and fans now, so obviously similarities are inevitable. Also I'm pretty sure I'm missing more sci-fi influences and/or resemblances in the movie. I guess what I'm trying to say to you is that, don't expect anything more than your typical sci-fi movie. Valerian and the city of thousand planets is such a visually astounding movie. The world building is impressive, doesn't make you roll your eyes, it's believable. Alien characters are incredible. You can tell that the artists involved in this crew have made an exceptional job. I really want to give all of them a hug and a pat on the back. Story-wise though... Nothing really surprised me. You could tell what was going on or going to happen with just a little bit of thinking. If you want to shut down your brain and not connect the pieces while watching then I can tell you'll be surprised but if you're like me and like to connect the dots yourself then it won't be a plot twist for you. I feel like the writers showed their hands way too quickly. The villain was so obvious, yes he had morals but he wasn't a character for us to care about. We didn't know anything about him, so we couldn't sympathize with him. I think a good villain is someone we can somehow sympathize with. I'll just tell one more problem I had with this movie then I'll shut up: the fact that it's 2 hours but it could very well be less than that. There are lots of scenes that wouldn't change anything if cut, and that's always a minus for me. Overall, I had a great time watching this movie and I can only find problems if I look at it critically. As an average viewer I was not disappointed. A good choice to watch to have a good time.

Visually beautiful but apart from that, it felt like it was conceived, produced and acted by high school kids. This film is about as amateur as it gets, masked by high end special effects!
