Set against an Eastern European nation's election, in a country that was the most notorious communist dictatorship, the film charts the paths of five characters; An aging CIA officer; A young attractive economic advisor; The ambitious Bulgarian Prime Minister's chief of staff; An American political consultant; and a retired member of the Bulgarian Communist State Police. These five character destinies intertwine in the weeks leading up to the elections in a fledgling democracy.

The setting of Bulgaria lends great validity to the story. There are many American Campaign consultants who work throughout the world and in the Eastern Bloc that blur the distinctions between the right and wrong and serve only their narrow financial interests. The cast is wonderful and drive the story. I have traveled the world and my experience with US Embassy personnel "going native" is captured perfectly. Too often the US meddling in the local political scene represents the interests of the Embassy maintaining the status quo versus what may in fact be in the best interest of the home country. Loftus captures this dynamic perfectly.I really enjoyed this film.

Hello, I normally don't write reviews but want to for this film as it did not get much press. It is a shame, it should have as it is a very well made, smart drama political thriller.Trade Routes offers many viewers something they need to know and need to think about. But this film is worth checking out as the acting was good, the directing was good, the film looked amazing - perhaps due to the locations - but it did really look well. This type of film makes you question many things and it is must see so please check it out ASAP, thanks.
