Annoyingly smug and self-satisfied.Make fun of romantic comedies all you want - God knows that some of them deserve it... but when you explain everything over and over, to make sure we get the 'joke', that makes you just as bad. Irony doesn't save you.The vast majority of the humour drags insufferably... but then the one joke that does actually work on some weird level is edited so tightly as to deny us any reaction. It's a constant and perhaps even deliberate rejection of tone, and it had me off balance from the beginning, never to get back on side... Perhaps that was the intention, but if you want to destroy convention, then make it an inside job, and do it with engaging characters. It's not as if I have a fundamental objection to David Wain's style of comedy, either, because I loved "Wanderlust"... Oh well.

So, I heard about this movie by chance, I checked out the cover, and it seemed, well, like something I didn't really want to see. But then I heard of it again, on some list over under-appreciated, or underrated movies, and I decided to give it a go.. And wow, this is actually one of the funniest movies I've seen in a long time. Some of the scenes here are actually some of the funniest I've ever seen. The movie isn't perfect, but it succeeds extremely well in making fun of all sorts of stupid romantic comedy/romantic movie-clichés. Making fun of them in a very dorky way. Very funny. So many stupid smiles, 'thoughtful' faces, silly dialogue and so on. I think some of the reason for this movies low score is probably that people don't get the jokes. Some of the jokes here are super obvious, almost in a spoof-kind-of-way, except they are followed through (like the pole-thing). But other jokes are more hidden, like how they constantly overdo the romantic stuff. And some of the jokes are even more hidden.Really my kind of humor, though. Don't actually think I've laughed this much from any movie, ever.Every actor involved does great, too. I always liked Paul Rudd, and he is his usual self. The way the story is told is also kind of smart. It's the right amount of poking fun at story-telling, and actually being a little clever with it. Well done.Funniest scene? Well, let's say I could tell you about it, but I'd probably have to say that again. That scene was hilarious, man. (you'll get it)

First off : this is my first review on IMDb ever, I've been browsing here for almost a decade but now the time has come to state my opinion. Because I can't really comprehend the low score for this movie, and also it has put me off from viewing this for a while, even though I'm a David Wain fan.I guess the humor isn't just for everybody. To be honest, I think this flick will have more success in Europe/Britain countries because the gags in the movie are really 'un-American type humor" like. Do you like absurd satire? This movie is filled with witty goofs that really ridicule al the modern day rom - com clichés, amazing performances by all actors that finally get to display another kind of comedy. Paul Rudd is an amazing versatile actor and Amy Poehler is definitely the funniest woman out there in Hollywood! This is my kind of movie, where I really laugh during the movie, like physically laugh out loud and later mesmerize how great it was, thinking about the best quotes that were in there. Just the title alone got me in a giggle every time I see it.No doubt this will have a cult following, just like American Wet Hot Summer.

I am sorry to have to write a review of a bomb starring two of my favorite comic actors, Paul Rudd and Amy Poehler. However, I feel I owe this to humanity. Perhaps I can prevent someone else from wasting one precious minute of their lives on this movie. Even on Netflix. If this was meant as farce, it failed epically. Farce entails an overblown portrayal of real situations and people. Unfortunately, the characters in this picture are all too real in today's Manhattan. And they are not funny in a country where the rich are richer at the expense of the not-rich. Manhattan and chic Brooklyn are not funny. They represent what is increasingly wrong with the country. This just makes this movie seem callously ignorant. So, I would group this film with bad comedies about Germany in the 1930s. Yes, it is that bad. Bad writing, uncomfortable acting and plastic staging. If the actors were embarrassed, it would be to their credit. Basically, this movie could be fixed up and marketed as a horror version of "Sex In The City".
