The Theatre Bizarre Trailers

Down a seedy city street in her neighborhood, young Enola Penny is obsessed with what appears to be a long abandoned theatre. One night, she sees that the front door is slightly ajar and impulsively decides to sneak inside. But there in the dark, decrepit auditorium, a show unlike any other unfolds before her eyes. Its host is an eerie human puppet named Peg Poett who will introduce Penny to six tales of the bizarre: A couple traveling in a remote part of the French Pyrenees cross paths with a lustful witch; A paranoid lover faces the wrath of a partner who has been pushed to her limit; The Freudian dreams of an unfaithful husband blur the lines between fantasy and reality; The horrors of the real world are interpreted through the mind of a child; A woman addicted to other people's memories gets her fix through the vitreous fluid of her victims' eyeballs; And a perverse obsession with sweets turns sour for a couple in too deep.

Overall, mostly meh.The Mother of Toads (Stanley's contribution) is apparently a Lovecraft riff, but I was getting Argento vibes from the witch mother, the medieval European setting, and the music. It's just alright with some icky special effects and a bare bones story.I Love You is about an obsessive guy who can't stop loving his cheating hateful wife. Also just alright, though the two leads are solid.Wet Dreams, the Savini segment, is about a cheating man this time who gets his comeuppance from a wife who has been scorned one too many times. It's nasty though also lacking a certain danger or sense of pure chaos. It's kinda funny, kinda gross, kinda alright. The Accident is completely out of place tonally and even so it's not very good. Airy pretensions and a somber mood don't mean much here.Vision Stains has an interesting premise and some good moments but isn't exactly great.Sweets is a nasty, gross, icky flip off of a segment. It's nothing but a punchline but it kinda works.

A six part anthology horror film has an effective wrap around segment Directed by Jeremy Kasten. It tells of a young woman (Virginia Newcomb) who is drawn to a rundown Theatre where a marionette-like man (Udo Keir) introduces the stories. The first is "The Mother of Toads" based on a story by H.P. Lovecraft, this bizarre tale tells of a couple in the outskirts of France who meet an old witch (Catriona Maccoll) who entices Martin (Woodward) with a real copy of the Necronomicon. Not all is what it seems and the cursed witch and her evil powers have a surprise waiting. This is the most atmospheric and scary segment of the entire movie. Directed by Richard Stanley mixes bizarre imagery and some gooey F/X into this standout segment. "I Love You" tells of Axel (Hennicke), a paranoid lover who wants one more chance with his wife (Suzan Anbeh) before he goes off and does something bloody to her. Directed by Buddy Giovinazzo this segment keeps your interest and plays it all for the end twist which is decent and bloody. "Wet Dreams' Directed by Tom Savini tells of Donnie (James Gill) who is having dreams he can't control. This dream within a dream segment has some intense gore scenes including limbs being pulled off on a rack and a good cast but isn't very fulfilling story wise. "The Accident" Directed by Douglas Buck is a serious drama piece told through the eyes of a young girl (Melodie Simard) who witnesses an accident on the road and tries to understand death. An art house segment that is thoughtful, but ultimately out of place in this collection of stories. "Vision Stains" Directed by Karim Hussain tells of a woman (Kaniehtiio) obsessed with other people's memories. She stalks them and kills them and drains their eye fluid and injects it into her own to see their memories and tell their stories. Nasty and not very much fun this is an experimental segment with a weak payoff. The final segment is "Sweets" which is an avant-garde piece by David Gregory that truly marches to its own tune. Greg (Guilford Adams) has been sucked into an unusual relationship with candy and dessert obsessed Estelle (Goranson) who has completely changed him. When the segment starts Estelle is leaving him and the blubbering Greg is desperate which leads to him coming to a dinner party where what is on the menu is truly depraved. The blood soaked and gory ending is an eye popper that caps off this truly bizarre story. It gets high marks for originality but may turn off many mainstream horror fans. This is a new form of anthology movie which has different Directors doing each segment. Like "The ABCs of Death", this makes for a rather unbalanced affair overall. The vision, style and type of story are so varied that no wrap-around story can tie them together. You will end up liking some and not others.

This is an anthology.Theatre Guignol: The overarching segment. A young obsessed sleepless woman goes across the street in the dead of night and goes into a theatre lightly populated with life sized puppets. The puppets introduce her to the following six stories. The Mother Of Toads: Set in Mirepoix which is near the Pyrenees in southern France. A young couple takes pictures of wood carvings of pagan gods. The woman wants a pair of earrings, which depict an image from HP Lovecraft's works. The vendor claims to have a true copy of the Necronomicon at another site. They drive there; Katrina goes to a nearby spa while Martin talks to the vendor, samples the local (drugged) wine, and leafs through the book. Katrina's return is not a happy one. The next day, Martin has a glimpse of what he spent the night with. He goes looking for Katrina.I Love You: Set in Berlin, Germany. Axel wakes up with a bloody cut on his hand. He has no idea why. Mo shows up to get a few things before she leaves him. They talk; she's a multiple betrayer, he's a controlling idiot, she's too young for him. Did I forget lying witch? It does not end well.Wet Dreams: Donnie accidentally slugs Carla when he wakes up from a nightmare. Dr. Maurey asks him about the nightmare of a beautiful girl who coaxes him to bed, only to emasculate him with her 'Lovecraftian' vagina. The Dr. tells him a strategy for interrupting the nightmares, so Donnie tries it. It fails; instead, he dreams of the other times he's hit Carla, and of her suicide attempt. The doctor's wife Maxine and Donnie did some things together; the doctor and Carla settle scores. The Accident: Mother talks about death with her young Daughter: growing old, being in accidents, Old Yeller. Sad tale, nicely done.Vision Stains: Junkie girl shoots up in an alley. The writer uses a surgical procedure to steal the dying visions of the junkies she murders. In this short, she first murders the junkie girl, and writes up her experiences. Then she murders an old homeless woman. The writer despises men, and kills women only, because the women have suffered more and better, somehow. Right, sure, whatever your excuses are for serial murder. The writer gets quite a surprise when she injects fluid from the belly of a pregnant woman.Sweets: Estelle and Greg are a couple drowning in sweet food. Estelle created the circumstances in which they find themselves; now she rejects it. Greg's hopelessly in love, and cries a lot while trying to bargain his way out of this trap. Estelle and a new friend Antonia go to an exclusive food club and talk about moderation. The club kills Greg, guts him to general applause, then eats various parts of him raw.------Scores-------Cinematography: 10/10 Excellent.Sound: 9/10 Fine.Acting: 8/10 Enjoyable, by and large. Liked Udo Keir in particular. The Mother and Daughter actors in 'The Accident' were wonderful.Screenplay: 9/10 Well-made horror anthology.

It's pretty hard for a movie anthology with six different segments to strike out six times in a row, but this mess managed to fail on every occasion. Sure, there are terrible movies that are just an excuse for sex and/or gore, but at least some of those are either clever or have some actual eroticism in them. This waste of time was just repulsive from the word go, and had not one coherent storyline in any of the six miserable stories. I'm a big horror fan, and even I was disgusted by this pitiful attempt at horror storytelling. I couldn't wait for this over-produced mess to end. It's very difficult to come up with six stories that had no point to them. The idiots that directed and wrote this garbage should be proud of the fact that they could accomplish such a difficult feat.
