I just watched the special edition of this movie and the commentary explains a lot. I watched this movie at least 100 times in the 90's. They did not identify the time period because they did not have the budget to maintain it (although it is supposed to be in the 70's). The production company compares it to Dazed and Confused on the box not the writers. Dazed and confused was a lame movie that tried to be funny at times and serious at times and failed at both. Stoned age tries only to be completely ridiculous and succeeds. If you liked Dazed and confused get a life and don't watch this movie it is intended for people who take themselves less seriously.
... View MoreI remember the times when VTV a local Slovak television put this film 1 time a week and all the times I watched it. Man I saw it 100 times and it was always worth it. We even made a fanclub for this film and our younger friends are coming to watch it and everybody loves it. In our country it is called --Rockmania-- and the name is accurate. It is about chicks, alcooohoooooool, and rock. Blue Oyster is an amazing band and after the film U can see them selling T-shirts. What makes this film so good are the personalities, dialogues and music. There are so many good jokes that we are used to talk them over and over.---Hele, Tekmajstr prizdisrac, plivni na nej.--- (In original probably something like - Look, Tack-master, shitface(in czech ---prizdisrac--- something like the one who shits beside a wall), spit on him) ---This one is for those who speak Czech because here U can find only the Czech copy and I am probably the only one who found and bought an original VHS of it so now I am a local rock god.
... View MoreInvariably this movie is compared to "Dazed and Confused" as they are both roughly about teenage life in the 70's. The similarities end there. D&C is infinitely more polished and better in pretty much every category. The production on "The Stoned Age" is poor as clearly the producers did not have a lot of money to roll into this one. Writing isn't very good. Costumes have serious holes if they are actually trying to be authentic to the 70's era styles.Having said all that, this is a pretty funny movie if you can get past the many many weaknesses. Along the lines of Bill and Ted's or Waynes World and with the huge bonus of Keanu Reeves or Dana Carvey NOT being in the movie. Mindless, childish humor that works on a lot of levels if you grew up in the 70's and are an adult, or if your an adolescent currently. I wouldn't pay 7 bucks to see this in a theater by any means but it's worth a few bucks from the local video store. And if you have some good herb to smoke while you watch, it will enhance your viewing experience. You tend to forgive the many failures of the movie. Not endorsing smoking dope necessarily. I haven't in years but when I did, this movie was much better. After all, it is called The Stoned Age and smoking ensues throughout the flick. All I'm saying. :)
... View MoreBit of advice to low budget filmmakers - have your film take place during the present day. Setting your film in the past is expensive and takes a lot of time and energy. This movie's depiction of 1970's era Southern California is so bad, it's as if they made no effort whatsoever. I mean, the very first scene has Crump's brother standing on the side of the highway as Ford Explorers and late 90's model Volvo Station wagons go cruising by. I didn't even know it took place in the 70's until Joe had his 8-track eaten by the Blue Bomber. Even the wardrobe and hair is terrible. Half the cast looks straight out of the Seattle grunge scene - tight, ripped jeans, leather jackets and long, straight hair. Hell, Hubbs looks more like the dude from the Cult than a 17 year-old high school kid in the 70's. The "hot" chick adds even more confusion, with her late-80's, metal groupie, "she's my cherry pie", Warrant video ensemble. Now, with that said, there are some great moments. Tack is hilarious and perfect. Joe's brush with Blue Oyster Cult and "the laser" is classic. The soundtrack of Ted Nugent, Sabbath, and the aforementioned BOC totally rocks (guess we know where the budget went). The Schnapster rules (*ping!*) Mike Dick and Mike New York and all their cases of talls rule too. Kind of amazing how such a bad flick can have so many classic moments. As a matter of fact, every poorly contrived scene of bad dialogue and even worse wardrobes is actually worth sitting through, if just for that one scene where Tack starts talking about his zits. Dazed and Confused, one of my all time favorite movies, doesn't have a single scene as funny, as candid, as just straight up randon, as that one. "I don't want no chicks with zits, I want fine chicks!" Amen, Tack.
