Milos Forman's The People vs Larry Flint is a good drama which primarily poses the question of the first amendment rights in the US. Larry Flint is arrested because of his "evil" practices and tried at court but Flint believes that its in his right by the amendment to do as he chooses. Of course before all this there is the narration of his colorful life and all the people in it such as his wife Althea. This is a somewhat tragic look at a larger than life personality. All the actors from Edward Norton to Woody Harellson and Courteney Love are very good. But it's a subject that should fascinate you. A good watch.

Milos Forman's "The People vs. Larry Flynt" tells the true story of how Hustler magazine publisher Larry Flynt unwittingly became a crusader for freedom of speech. Beginning in the early 1970's, the movie follows Flynt as he builds a porn empire with his racy alternative to Playboy. Of course, pushing the boundaries of good taste has a tendency to ruffle some people's feathers, so he quickly (and frequently) finds himself involved in various legal wranglings. Defending his business interests, he stands his ground on the premise of freedom of speech.Thankfully, the Golden Globe-winning screenplay doesn't paint Flynt as a selfless crusader for human rights. He straddles the grey area between hero & anti-hero and the script doesn't go out of its way to sway you one way or the other. The premise is fascinating on its own but further colour is added by way of delving into other areas of Flynt's life.Portraying Flynt is Woody Harrelson in his first Oscar-nominated performance. He carries the movie, creating a portrayal that makes Flynt likable as a character, regardless of what you think of his profession. Courntney Love also got a fair amount of attention as Flynt's wife but I'm not completely sold on her presence here. More memorable, in my mind, is Edward Norton in an early role as Flynt's long-suffering lawyer. The supporting cast is generally reliable as well, including Harrelson's brother Brett as Larry's younger brother Jimmy.Milos Forman's direction is top notch, as expected. He received an Oscar nomination and took home a Golden Globe for his efforts. The movie has an attractive look that is vividly brought to life with attention to detail in the period-specific costumes & sets. Some period-specific soundtrack selections further enhanced the movie's feel. All in all, "The People vs. Larry Flynt" is a fascinating portrait of a man of dubious morals who ended up fighting for the free speech of all Americans. With fine direction and acting thrown into the mix, the movie is a unique, entertaining tale of a true rebel, though one that is unlikely to appeal to all tastes due to the risqué subject matter.

A partially idealized film of the controversial pornography publisher (Woody Harrelson) and how he became a defender of free speech for all people.Whether or not you like pornography or even care about it, this film is interesting and important. First, it makes the case that Flynt made: the First Amendment should be protected, even when the Amendment itself protects things we find objectionable. (Now, how much he believed this and how much it was a legal ploy is open to debate.) But he was also a big figure in America history, connecting in to Jimmy Carter, the AbScam case with the FBI, and various other important events. There was the question of organized crime connections. They are brushed aside here, but the question remains. When Flynt passes, the FBI files on him could be fascinating.

Well, considering I'm a law school student and I have always enjoyed 90's courtroom dramas, Larry Flint's story couldn't stand only in my wish list. That being said, last night I rented it and had a good time. "The People vs. Larry Flynt" differs from the main movies of the genre due to its eccentric characters, professionally portrayed by Woody Harrelson and Courtney Love. Harrelson's character is a man who does everything in his power to innovate and provoke the society, in order to expand the idea that we can't just accept what people say to us; we have to use our minds and do what we feel like doing, as long as it doesn't negatively affect other people's lives-- and that's an ideology I've always agreed with. His wife, on the other hand, is an uneducated girl who spent her youth years working with him in the pornography industry, never seeming to care whether it was right or wrong, good or bad. Also, she is the one who helps Larry Flynt's fell apart, abusing of prescribed drugs. One sad thing I have to admit is that I actually LAUGHED at her behavior; I mean, she looked so junkie and crazy, mainly in the court scenes, that it felt absurd to see her that way. The juridical aspect of the movie isn't very elaborated or analyzed, given that the dramatical aspects of Flint's life are more in evidence than anything else. So, if you're looking for strong courtroom dramas, there are several better ones out there, like "Red Corner" and "Primal Fear". In case you'd rather see a drama involving someone's life, including its problems with the judiciary, this film is a good choice.
