Not band of brothers, but still great. The three main characters are all phenomenal. Hits you in the gut on multiple occasions.

Pacific is done with a similar flair that Band of Brothers possessed, but doesn't have quite the same feel to it...and there is no reason it should really...The War in Europe, and The War in the Pacific, were totally different...and the overall tempo of the Pacific War is shown pretty much the way it was, in an island hopping campaign that never seemed to end...Where BoB tells a story of deep emotional ties, developed within an Army company of Paratroopers, Pacific tells a completely different story, one of young men who made the giant leap from civilian to Marine, in a very short time. There is a certain loyalty displayed, and patriotism, but each character is portrayed as an individual...the movie dwells a lot on the inner turmoil that every soldier had to deal with...One reviewer really slammed the series, for not being realistic...I would agree partially, but this wasn't supposed to just focus on how fanatical the Japanese were. Instead, it tries to paint a broader picture of how our young men reacted to the constant fighting...Frankly, I did like Pacific, more because I did not expect it to be another movie...

I was really excited to watch the series knowing this was a Companion piece to Band of Brothers (BOB) covering the Pacific Theater of Operations during WW-2, the series covers 1st Marine Division's battles on islands such as Guadalcanal, Cape Gloucester, Peleliu, and Okinawa. As a standalone series Pacific is excellent, but BOB being there a comparison had to be made and when done I felt Pacific to be a notch lower in almost every department. It's a different series than BOB in covering more on depressing side of the war than the heroic side. The series visualizes the war from the view point of three individuals of 1st Marine from very different backgrounds, getting into their private life. Its show how normal citizens become hero, some are heroes by action during battles, some by just surviving the war and not turning into monster. A lot of time is spend away from action, an episode covers a year spent in Australia, one recovering from battle trauma, another on finding love & getting married. The series focuses more on individual emotions & bonds, frankly the time spend away from action is not entertaining as mostly it covers the gloomy side of war, the damaged soldiers & there condition. The sad part is the time spend on war also gets repetitive after a time with most of the islands being similar in nature, the jungles with its malaria, rains, heat & the unrelenting japs. The action shown in the series is more gory then heroic, the series probably sets out portray wars as grim thing and not grand stuff and is successful at it.

A lot has been said already about The Pacific. But still I like to add my opinion on this series. I watched The Pacific some years ago soon after watching Band of Brothers. I admit I was slightly disappointed, I couldn't identify with the characters, I found it difficult to keep track of the story lines, the ending was not very satisfying. Recently I watched the series a second time within two weeks. Surprisingly I was very impressed this time, actually I consider this series a better one than BOB. I think it is more realistic in that sense that warfare isn't adventurous or heroic at all. The picture is a grim one, it shows a more true face of war (which luckily I have no idea about at all!) than BOB I think, no glamour, no heroes, no humor, no reward, no victory, even romance is due to fail. This time the story was crystal clear to me and the ending logical. I recommend this series, with in mind that it will never be able to present an accurate view of the reality of war, but probably it comes close. It is very well acted, visually exciting and leaving you with a scary view of battle, it is as if only faith will keep you alive. Finally, the visual and sound quality is amazing in my opinion. One of the best scenes is when Snafu and Slegdehammer hate each others guts on Okinawa after surviving all previous battles together, there's no sense of comradery anymore, no heroism or victory, all that has left is trauma and frustration.
