Due to an experimental vaccine, Dr. Robert Neville is the only human survivor of an apocalyptic war waged with biological weapons. Besides him, only a few hundred deformed, nocturnal people remain - sensitive to light, and homicidally psychotic.

Here's Charlton Heston in the swingin' 70's version of I am Legend. A worldwide plague caused by bacterial warfare kills everyone except Heston and a gang of zombified plague victims known as "The Family." The Family spends every night trying to destroy this last vestige of the old world while Heston tries to find others and retain his sanity in this empty world. This is a very watchable movie from the groovy era of filmmaking. This movie has a heavy early 70s date stamp on it with its look and production. It's not Heston versus mindless zombies. The Family have intellect, a leader and an agenda. Usually these types of groups were supposed to represent communist infiltration, but in this one it's not so clear who they're supposed to be. So soon after the Manson Family, they could be meant to represent something entirely different. Omega Man is a good movie, but I still prefer The Last Man on Earth with Vincent Price. You'll probably like this one better than I am Legend with Will Smith if for no other reason than it's got a great look from a classic era.

A biological plague has wiped out most of the population. However some were infected and did not die but became psychotic killers who can't stand light and call themselves the Family. Army doctor Robert Neville (Charlton Heston) is immune to the plague and has to fight the Family every night who want to kill him. He meets others like him but they might turn into killers also. Can he find a cure and convince the Family he can cure them?OK semi-adaptation of "The Last Man on Earth". Heston is good and Rosalind Cash (may she RIP) pops up halfway through and she's great. Also Anthony Zerbe is convincing as the head of the Family. All in all it's very OK but pretty forgettable.

Robert Neville (Charlton Heston) stars in an adaptation of Richard Matheson's science fiction novel, I Am Legend.Set in an apocalyptic world after germ warfare between China and Russia, Neville is the last man on earth after receiving a serum that enabled him to survive. He roams desolate Los Angeles by day, talking to himself. At night bloodthirsty mutants emerge who Neville is intent on killing. The mutants are led by Matthias (Anthony Zerbe), a former television newscaster now in charge of his own cult that has declared war on modern society and what Neville, a doctor and scientist stands for.Neville finds out that he is not the last man on earth as he comes across a group of young people lead by Lisa (Rosalind Cash) who he forms an emotional bond with.Director Boris Sagal managed to do well to show a deserted LA but apart from that his directions lacks flair and instead comes across as cheesy with leader of the mutants dressed as monks in sunglasses, black characters talking in jive. Heston plays his character in stoic manner, it is funny to see him chuckling to himself while watching footage of Woodstock. It is also worth noting that a man who marched alongside with Martin Luther King during the civil rights movement takes part in an interracial romance even though by that time his politics had moved to the right.

Yes, it's cheesy at times. Charlton "doomsday" Heston began his sci-fi trek in the 70's and gave us 3 great movies, of which this is one. I love the pithy One-Liners that began with this flick, and are now a staple. Heston was a leader of the Civil Rights movement in Hollywood, and so we have a great interracial dynamic created by the producers when the last man finds the last woman. Anthony Zerbe is fantastic as his nemesis, and Rosalind Cash was a new performer but did everything she could with this role. There are some great plot twists and tons of irony. The fantasy that you are the Last Man on Earth is a powerful one, done perfectly for this film. The ending imagery was a little over the top, but fitting. And the divergence from the novel about zombies to germ warfare was great. Loved it.
