That is, until Scott and Kate learn that the scholarship they were counting on didn’t come through, and they’re now on the hook for tuition they can’t begin to afford. With the help of their friend and neighbor Frank also in need of a major payday they decide to open an illegal casino in his suburban house, risking everything together on a Vegas-style bacchanal where money flows, inhibitions are checked at the door, and all bets are off.

This film has everything you would expect. There are plenty of funny moments and an alright premise. The problem, however, is how redundant this movie feels. It's not that bad of a movie, but it's just that everything done in this movie has been done better in previous movies. It has that Will Ferrell humor, sure, but it's nothing special. Nothing about this movie, other than the fact that it's about a Casino in a house, is special, and it's hard for me to recommend when there are far better films with Will Ferrell in them, as this movie is a painfully bland Will Ferrell outting.

Maybe when Ferrell was a young guy on SNL, the clueless look was worth a few laughs. The dumb, earnest, innocent guy "accidentally" saying naughty words is funny - oh, MAYBE - once. And for Ferrell that was in 1975. Poehler relies on "soccer mom saying dirty words" humor and likewise, hasn't been funny in a long time; the same old "Amy Poehler is SO-O-O funny" schtick. This might have actually been a cute movie without the "big-time comedy" perennials doing the same parts they do over and over.

I suppose the meeting goes something like this: "Wow. You think you can get Will Ferrell and Amy Poehler on the same page with this?" "Yep, they're on board, two Saturday Night Live standouts, with Will obviously the bigger name, it can't miss." Hollywood does not think it really matters what the story/script is about once you have these two performers. Anything will do and that's certainly the case with this dreadful film by Andrew Jay Cohen, the man who brought us the awful 'Bad Neighbours.' He's just repeated the trick of pulling in a couple of names. That film starred Seth Rogen and Zac Efron and resulted in a sequel! 'The House' is billed as a comedy, but nothing funny happens, there are no clever/witty lines, zero. Stop paying for this garbage you are only encouraging them.

While this movie is a little far fetched, I could actually relate to it. As a senior in college I can remember how awful it was applying to colleges and realizing what my parents could or could not afford, how hard they worked for me, and how excited they were that I was going to college. I am a huge Will Farrell and Amy Poehler fan, and the two of them together is comedic gold. The cast is jam-packed with other well-known comedians and I am automatically drawn to any movie with these actors/actresses in them. This movie plays on what parents and college students joke about doing when they can't afford things - becoming a stripper, robbing a bank, or betting all their money ... I could not stop laughing throughout the entire movie.
