The Dilemma (2011): Dir: Ron Howard / Cast: Vince Vaughn, Kevin James, Winona Ryder, Jennifer Connelly, Channing Tatum: Misfire comedy about relationships. Vince Vaughn discovers that his best friend's wife is cheating on him and he struggles as to how to communicate this. Vaughn first misfires when the four of them sit around a table while he basically describes the plot. He and Kevin James are best friends and partners in a car business. He was previously addicted to gambling now he plans to propose to his girlfriend. The film's best scenes involve Vaughn's encounters with the guy screwing his best friend's wife. Fists fly and a lot of expensive items get broken. Vaughn will unfortunately suffer for this until the contrived conclusion. James is given the moronic task of being too stressed when Vaughn must speak with him privately. This is totally contrived and renders James unsympathetic. In fact, his dealings with Vaughn before a meeting are in pathetic bad taste. Winona Ryder is at best when she is found out by Vaughn and attempts retaliation, otherwise we know she will be found out and it lacks the emotional payoff because of earlier contrivances that prevent viewers from giving a crap about James. Jennifer Connelly as Vaughn's girlfriend is not as three dimensional as perhaps she should be. Channing Tatum steals scenes as the destructive new boyfriend to Ryder who trashes an apartment better than any carefree pet. A major down size for Ron Howard whose more successful films include Apollo 13 and A Beautiful Mind. Strong message but the real dilemma will be whether viewers can forget it fast enough. Score: 6 / 10
... View MoreIf this were marketed as a serious discussion on the boundaries/obligations of friendship and difficulties caused by infidelity, I would say, yeah it pretty much hit the mark, but as a comedy. it left a lot to be desired. Usually, if a comedy is this bad, I mention the music. But I really didn't notice the music. What I noticed was a lot of very angry people and nothing close to funny. One of my college professors once said no conflict/no story. As far as this being a serious drama, this story seems to try to manufacture needless conflict in every relationship it details and fails to make any of this conflict interesting. Jennifer Connelly, Vince Vaughn, Wynona Rider, Channing Tatum, Kevin James, and Ron Howard wasted their talents here, shockingly.
... View MoreTHE DILEMMAThis is a good comedy.I went to the cinema with my girlfriend to watch this a long time ago. We watched it again last night and still thought it was good. The movie is about 2 guys, Vince Vaughn and Kevin James, who are best friends and business partners. They are just trying to land a big contract with the car company, Dodge. Vince catches Kevin's wife fooling around with another man, but he doesn't know if he should tell him or not because he doesn't want to hurt his friend and also let it distract him from the job at hand. Vince then confronts Kevin's wife about it and she bribes him to not say anything. The rest of the movie is about Vince trying to catch her out with funny consequences. The casting is good for this film. I am not a huge Vince Vaughn fan, but I don't mind him. He has made some good films in the past. He does a good job in this film. Kevin James is a funny man, he makes me laugh. I liked him in King of Queens. Vince's girlfriend is played by Jennifer Connelly and Kevin's wife is played by Winona Ryder. My favourite character in the movie is a guy named Zip, played by Channing Tatum. He is so funny in this movie. The story is good, the acting is good and it is directed by Ron Howard who is a legend.I will give this film 7 out of 10.A good comedy with not too much of the romance. ... View MoreThe 2 lead male characters are long time close friends and business partners. One of them discovers the others' wife is cheating so his "dilemma" is whether to tell his friend what he has discovered. The film is billed as a comedy, but very difficult to find much that is funny in the movie, though it is not so bad as at least I watched it to the end.My main problem with the picture is the two main actors look very similar in facial appearance and for me it was a major annoyance and was confusing.5/10
