I decided to watch this film on a late Saturday night. I picked it because I knew Kumajl Nanjiani from Silicon Valley, and I was bored and felt like watching a comedy (I didn't really know what the film was about). And, oh boy, was I in for a surprise. The comedic aspect was there, but the emotional side was a total surprise for me. Even though the film is only loosely based on a true story, it felt very realistic and I found it easy to connect with the protagonist (Kumail Nanjiani can play dramatic roles, too! Well, it is explainable because he was almost reliving some tragic moments and feelings he had been through before). I found it particularly amusing when "Up" was mentioned because at some point the film seemed to carry an emotional weight which I could only compare with the very same movie. Overall, I was very positively impressed with "The Big Sick" and I liked it. Totally unexpected and I understand all the hype about it now! I would even go as far as saying that it is a must-see!

Movie is based, how an immigrant is stuck between two worlds, how adjusting in a foriegn country is difficult, while you are also taking along the traditions. Dont worry i have not spoiled the movie and this is not the plot. Kumail Nanjiani, a comedian is trying to hard with the jokes, while being normal. One or two jokes are there but the rest is little disappointing. Best actor Anupam Kher is wasted. Pretty Shenaz Treasury is hardly in the movie, was she even in the titles? Nevertheless, its not a 7 but somewhere between a 5 or 6. Good for weekend when you have nothing better.

This has to be one of the best comedy/romance movies I have watched.

I was fairly critical while watching the film because, I am going through the exact same set of events depicted in the plot for the film. To my considerable surprise it was quite relevant. If some over-the-top dramatic scenes required for a feature film to be effective are cornered, this is exactly what happens in our part of the world when you propose a girl to marry you against your parents wishes. The film has a very feel-good vibe to it nevertheless. The story is serious but, the situational comedy is perfect. There are no punch lines or slapstick humor to get you laugh but, the conditions are such that it looks effortless and that the real beauty of this Rom-Com. I believe it is extremely difficult to write your own life story for screen and moreover to relieve it by being the main character in it but, doing stand-up for a living actually helped Kumail in accomplishing this difficult task. The vulnerabilities, insecurities and sensitivities are truly exposed by the writers. At times he feels helpless and at times strong enough to be on his own and face the consequences. All in all, this film will not preach you any life lessons but, you will be candidly amused by the chain of events and smile all the time. And then there is that final lovey-dovey, sugary-sweet happy ending which will make you more elated.
