'Sunshine (2007)' is one of the strangest cases of a total tonal, genre-bending gear-switch I think I've ever seen committed to film, with the initially grandiose existentialism of the thoughtful and slow-paced science-fiction thriller exchanged wholeheartedly for a strangely silly and slightly schlocky 'slasher' flick finale frustratingly forced into the film in place of a more appropriate ending that cashes the cheque of its intriguing ideas and terrific themes in a more expected yet satisfying way. Though for the faults that this two-handed approach provides, I don't necessarily think that it can totally ruin what came before and, while it's certainly an odd choice that taints the sum of its parts, the overall effect of the picture isn't lost thanks to its uniquely interesting aesthetic, expert direction, engaging high-concept ideas, superb soundtrack and satisfying screenplay. It's rare that the thing that sets a film apart from pretty much all others in the genre is also the thing that threatens to drag it below them, and to complain about originality seems slightly hypocritical even if in this case the choice is totally tonally inconsistent. Thankfully, the quality of the overall piece makes this somewhat of an underrated gem. 7/10

This is meant to be Earth's best hope? A bunch of neurotics? I demand to see the recruitment people in HR!!!! ... But maybe that's the problem....Anyway, the whole monster thing is utter rubbish. I've been more threatened by a tanduri chicken drumstick.

Scifi movies are most often a one gimmick story. There may be a monster, like Godzilla, a prison planet, a Moon or Mars colony, time travel. This particular movie is about averting the Apocalypse. In the future, people send a huge ship to reignite the sun which is dying. We have seen this done the cowboy way in Deep Impact and Armageddon. In this movie, the people manning the ship are scientists and astronauts. So, they are boring people who do boring stuff like calculating collision courses and having philosophical discussions.So, what could have gone wrong? Well, first thing is that they killed the best characters first. Second is that they tried to insert some God/Satan stuff in in some ill-advised and ambiguous way. And third, really nothing interesting happens between the beginning and the end of the movie. We knew from the beginning they were going to bomb the sun. They end up bombing it. So, what is there to surprise us, anyway? Still, the acting performances were good in spite of the actors not having much to work with. Camera work was great, except for the dumb action scenes at the end. The filmmakers tried to confuse the audience, I suspect, because they were confused themselves about what meaning to give to the sabotage on board of the ship. Hence the hand held camera and the blurred sequences.
