After several horror websites raved about this movie I was expecting a lot more. I guess the plot was okay but the execution left much to be desired. I get it, horror movies are dark for a reason but when you literally cannot see what is going on it's gone too far. The music was good. There were several parts I just could not see. It did not grasp my attention. Conversely when spooky figures were on screen, they were on screen a LONG time. This is where the quick shots are normally but we got to have a good look at the figures, examine them, and then they continued to stand on screen. The jump scares didn't work because they were only when nothing was happening. If the jump scares were quick shots of the ghost children or whatever the heck they were it probably would have got me. Instead I stared at the screen wondering why dead kids doing the shhh thing is scary in literally every other movie besides this one.
... View MoreThe film itself is good, story, actors, it was scary of course etc... But I was disappointed with ending, I don't like films with bad endings where Evil wins against Peace. Maybe someone will tell me that it's only my personal problem, but I watch film for the ending, good ending. So if you are the type of person like me, don't watch the film.
... View MoreThis movie was mentioned in a list of recommended scary movies. I guess this movie is quite scary, and also quite sinister, and while I would commend its little use of jump-scares, I would say it makes an even greater sin: trying to make things scary by loud sound effects and music. While those are themselves conceptually and technically commendable, I find it an equally annoying and silly tactic. Speaking of silly, the film's "boogeyman" looks just like some "evil" metal band member in face-paint. Which I find ridiculous. At least one sees him rarely and there are some other alteration-effects to his look. The plot contains some baffling elements, and the protagonist unfortunately, while at first seeming relatively intelligent, turns out to be quite a douche, in a gratuitous way. A scene where we see him in an old TV-interview (he's a True Crime writer) is almost like a parody-sketch of an interview. The plot is generally unexplained and things "just happen" from a day-to-day-basis, which makes the plot feel somewhat unconnected. Maybe to some extent this is deliberate, however the premise and other things could still require more explanation. E.g. of how the writer is in possession of all his research material, which no-one else seems to have seen (although he is not a very secretive person either), and he himself seems kind of slow and indulgent in getting through. Assuming to be able to solve a crime by just watching all the ritualistic murder videos seems also fairly contrived.A minor but consistent element of bafflement, and attempt to make things more scary, was that the protagonist, who almost always works at night, always leaves the lights out when he wanders around the house following some strange sounds, presumably to be more thoroughly surprised when he finds something or someone (it is otherwise pointless).

View MoreToday you do not see a lot of murder tapes but these ones were the best.Pool part 66 was the most disturbing a family being tied to lawn chairs and puled underwater by an unseen figure drowning them , BBQ 79 had calm music and Lawn Work 86 was my favorite overall it had great music and had a jump scare. This movie is a very gripping , dark and suspenseful movie and the other 2 tapes were Sleepy Time 98 which had a family and dog and the unseen figure did not kill the dog but killed the family and Family Hanging out 2011 was a classic murder tape.
