Steve Carell revives his dead pan character and teams up with Keira Knightley who creates a character with emotional baggage. They are Dodge and Penny who live in the same apartment complex but who have never met...until they both experience break ups. A meteor named Matilda is headed toward earth, one that even Bruce Willis can not destroy. It will be the end of the world. As the countdown continues, people react differently. There are suicides and hedonism...kids drinking, people doing drugs, and riots. There are those that still live simply.Much of the film is consumed by Dodge and Penny traveling to Delaware so he can visit his high school sweetheart one last time. The film is basically a romantic comedy with some hit and miss moments. More enkoyable than many of the other end of the world films that have come out over the last few years.Parental Guide: F-bomb, implied sex, no nudity. Drug use. Underage drinking encouraged by adults.
... View MoreI decided to watch this because I liked the title. Had I known that Keira Knightly was in it I might have chosen something else. I wish I had chosen something else.I would formally like to state to all other nations that not all English women talk like Keira Knightly. Not many people in the UK actually talk like that at all. It is really really annoying so I'm glad that we don't.I got a bit excited right towards the end when Steve Carell was going through Knightly's characters record collection and he flicked past Magnetic Fields 69 Love Songs. I was hoping to just hear one track from it to take my mind off this dull, rather pointless film, but alas, it didn't happen. You just get to hear loads of Scott Walker.
... View MoreBoy meets girl. They fall for each other... the end. Sometimes it's on a sinking ship. Sometimes it's while they're looking for treasure. Sometimes it's while people are trying to kill them. Sometimes it's just for the hell of it. This time, it happens when the world is coming to an end and there is only 3 weeks to live. Sometimes one dies, sometimes they both die, sometimes no one dies. Sure the occasional romance story can be entertaining, but does ever frickin story by default have to be centered around a romance? Will we ever be able to sink a ship, end the world, or anything we can name that won't be centered around a love story? I'm counting down to the day when that happens. Sure, hooking up with another person or finding the one is fun, but there's deeper meaning to the human experience.... isn't there? I'm glad that they didn't name this - Leon the Professional Part 2... In 15 Years It Won't Matter Anyways. Obviously they couldn't bring Leon back, but it was nice to see how Matilda ended up. Little spoilers below Random thoughts; I got a kick out of the meat head still going to the gym, however an entire restaurant staff still going to work with a less than a week to live... pretty lame.
... View MoreI really liked this movie! It is warm, comforting, wondrous, strange and uplifting. At first I found it a bit boring, but then I started to like it. The calm of the man in the main lead is very comforting. Maybe when you know the end is coming, when you know it will soon be over, there is real purpose and meaning and peace? In the midst of the total tragedy that is the ending of the world from a meteor impact, it seems like the people in the movie have come together in some way or another, or come to terms with themselves. I really like the feeling of tranquility that the movie has, in the face of doom. It is totally beautiful! The film is also funny, in a sometimes understated way, other times more explicit. The scene in the Friendsy's restaurant comes to mind. I liked the male lead more and more. The same with the female. I started caring for her, and in the end scene, everything comes together in a very touching and special moment. I am grateful for having found this gem of a movie!
