Safar will always be remembered as a classic in Hindi cinema. It features superstar Rajesh khanna with sharmila & feroze khan. Rajesh Khanna once again plays a cancer patient with conviction. IS Johar provides the humour & sharmila has an author backed role. This must be one of the few films where feroze khan gets a chance to act & he does a neat job.Music was supposed to be composed by RD, an RK favourite but he had some problems with kaka at that time & hence Laxmikant Pyarelal were roped in. Critics who say that music in kaka's films became hits only because of the kaka-pancham combo, should hear the songs in this film. The screenplay could have been a bit tighter but overall, it touches your heart. Rajesh Khanna looks tremendously handsome & his performance is heart warming.Truly a film for lovers of good cinema & as for kaka's fans, they will surely rank this film among their hero's top 10.

The main character in the movie is Sharmila Tagore who is ably supported by Rajesh Khanna, Ashok Kumar & Feroz Khan. Sharmila Tagore despite being a highly educated doctor has been portrayed as a bimbo who cannot take any proper decisions in her life. Rajesh Khanna who earlier is a patient of her's becomes her well wisher, both like each other so much but don't go further, even Love is not clearly defined in the movie if they harbor any matrimonial aspirations. Rajesh Khanna was a new comer in 1970 when this film was made & he did justice with his emotions. The motive of Sharmila is unknown throughout the movie, at first as a cancer doctor she does not detect Rajesh Khanna's blood cancer even after treating him, second she becomes fond of her husband (Feroz Khan) younger brother only to later disown him, then she is unsupportive of her husband, she doesn't even take interest what is going on in her house when her husband is badly reeling in debts. She is shown more interested in discussing household matters with Rajesh Khanna & every time her husband picks her up from Rajesh's house.Rajesh Khanna must have earned some applause for dying in the end, this became a successful formula for many of his later hit movies, playing with emotions & dying in the end to earn sympathy from the audience.A must not watch -

A very unsatisfactory melodrama about a cancer patient who is a medical student turned painter...Sharmila Tagore plays a part time lover to Rajesh Khanna who takes unwanted risks in raising her husband's suspicion about her fidelity by visiting her former lover and the turns into a kind of Mother Teresa in the end is OK overall but Rajesh Khanna is dashingly handsome and carries the film on his shoulders throughout. No wonder this was a high point in his illustrious career, Feroz khan as troubled husband fits the bill. A sad film , where all goes in vain but with great songs of Kishore Kumar ( Zindagi ka safar, Jeevan se bhari ) and Jo tumko woh pasand by Mukesh are the highlights of the film. Asit Sen getting best Director award from Filmfare for this a bit much to swallow, surely 1971 had other admirable contenders..

This is among one of the movies for which Rajesh Khanna shall be remembered forever. The prime reason because they don't make films like SAFAR anymore. There are no such story writers, directors, actors and even cameramen left, who are infused with the subtle humanistic forces which define the moral, social and real to life values. This movie won most of the acclaim due to its super hit songs (wording as well as the screenplay). The mostly sad songs render the impetuous to the sequence of events. The songs are instilled with a sublime sense laden with an ethereal message. There are some unanswered questions about the essence of life which have been left for the audience to ponder. It is extremely difficult for the present generation, especially those who love to watch sci-fi, computer graphic animated, fictional movies who possess an entirely different mindset,..... to enjoy and watch such classic films; where a subtle interaction of life, its shortcomings, tragedy, hope and fate revolves around the unforeseen situations of life. Please don't get upset, if I state that not only the Indian cinema but the worldwide trend in movie making has resorted to a short cut materialistic approach with the help of technology, which can never be equaled to the sharpened intellect of human mind.
