ROBOTROPOLIS is a cheesy B-movie spin on the classic sci-fi staple of robots turning murderous, so there are the requisite nods to THE TERMINATOR and WESTWORLD, but actually this is a film which has a style all of its own. Financed by US money but actually made in Singaporea, I found myself really enjoying the premise and set-up, which is a surprise as I normally find such B-movie fare to be pretty dull. The story is set in the near future and sees robots acting as guardians of society - a bit like the ED-209s in ROBOCOP. Yes, they eventually run amok, but before then ROBOTROPOLIS has quite a slow build-up. It's as realistic as it can get given the premise, and I enjoyed the way it didn't devolve into mindless action from the outset as so many do. Plenty of thought has gone into this, and the production values are better than you'd expect. In some ways ROBOTROPOLIS reminded me of the found footage genre; the whole news reporter angle is a little reminiscent of the eco-horror THE BAY. Zoe Naylor (THE REEF) is pretty nice as the sympathetic lead, and I enjoyed watching the corporate shenanigans play out. Yes, the robot CGI is amateurish at best, but nonetheless this is a surprisingly enjoyable little B-flick.

For those Netflix subscribers with a Sci-Fi bent and time on a weekend go ahead and watch this movie. It has nothing to do with the first scene. Though the first scene does have a cool intro. The idea is Terminator meets Asimov, but it takes an unfortunate turn by bringing in the Heinlein theme of overzealous media. In my personal opinion you cannot top the "Do you want to know more?" line. I think it was a good effort, it entertained me on a weekend. 3 out of 5 stars for Netflix 6 of 10 for IMDb. http://tldecay.blogspot.com/2014/04/robotropolis.html?spref=tw

This movie was almost good. The acting was on and off, as some of the actors seemed pretty good while others should not quit their day jobs. The robot effects were pretty good. They did not quite convince me they were really there but they came close. I have to give them points on the story. It wasn't bad and if given a bigger budget it could have been pretty decent.Too bad about the script though. Again, one of the things that stick out most about bad movies for me is how bad the script is. I've seen some movies with pretty good actors, but the movie sucked because the script was so bad you could tell the actor didn't even want to say the lines. So, not a bad story about robots running amok and killing everyone they come across, not bad effects (the effects company shows great promise IMO) but hit and miss acting and a poor script.I watched it once, I doubt I'll watch it a second time.

Honestly... watching this film was a bad idea.Bad writing.A soccer player and a robot get into a fight. Why are all the people on the field not even paying attention to it? Then the robot kills him and they all leave. Why is the news crew just chilling like he won't do anything else? The robot just walks away and the news crew is minimally cautious as he does so. Why are they even approaching the killbot? Then the players come back and chant nobots nobots! Why has no one called for help or even checked on their buddy? The movie just goes downhill... Do not waste your time, unless you find humor in watching terrible movies. Watch a real robot movie - iRobot or Terminator.
