After probability 30 years or so, I seen Purple Rain again for the second time in theaters at a midnight screening to honor the Purple ones life after his untimely recent death. I thought it would feel like the first time but I saw myself remembering all the imagery going on in the film, that's because I went into the theater expecting the movie to be dated, and something that would make me laugh out loud do to the cheesiness of the 1980s style. Instead I found a movie that was surprisingly timeless. This has a lot to do with the timelessness of Prince's music. There is a story in the movie. Prince plays The Kid, the front man of the band called the revolution, who is so into his own thing that he's isolating everyone including his band mates, which is bad for the business of the 7th street club they play at, cause he's not packing them in, but good for Rival band, The Time lead by Morris Day who uses this as part of his plan to become the one and only headliner at the club and to steel the Kid's love interest, Apollonia form him on both a romantic and professional level. The Story is well played out, but the real draw and what makes the movie great is that it's basally a long music video for the entire Purple Rain soundtrack. It maybe a disservice to call the album a soundtrack as listening to this music play as the movie progress it what gives the film a quality that still makes it worth checking out after 32 years (That and watching Morris Day and the time perform never gets old, ever!)So, it is pure 80s nostalgia, at it's best, but it's not as corny as you'd think, thanks to the wonderful contribution of music Prince as brought to the universe. A great experience watching the music

So 32 years after it originally came out-when I was 16 at the time and wouldn't have been able to watch it at a theatre then unless I was accompanied by an adult guardian-me and my movie theatre-working friend finally watched this now-classic movie at an AMC cinema he's employed at that starred Prince, about a week after his untimely death. A fictional version of his life when he was a struggling musician, this wasn't too bad as a drama but it was excellent when it showcased Prince's musical performances especially at the end when he went from the title song (great number!) to a couple of great uptempo songs. I also enjoyed some of the banter between Morris Day and one of his bandmates when trying to figure out a certain password which turned into a "Who's on First" tribute. My friend thought the movie was alright (I think he'll always prefer Elton John when it comes to musical performances) but I was mostly just glad to have finally watched this after so many years of missing it! So, yeah, that's a high recommendation for Purple Rain.

Well, of course, I am reviewing the film after the death of Prince and while the whole world is in shock and in search of his genius... so many will see this film - I am sure, for the first time - just like me.The film as a film is really nothing extraordinary. It is really Prince and music that make it really great. Now, after watching it, two things became clear to me: the reason why the videos for songs were as they were - they are actually part of the film and second one - I can now better understand the song Purple Rain. After the film and after watching it 'into the concept ' it makes more sense to me.I liked the colors in the movie. Very flamboyant, very 80's. The fashion, the music, the style... it all seems like a party. It all seems fun and that's what I liked the most about the movie. Although there is an underlying tragic story, the movie is fan for me. I am not sure whether they were all serious with the film. Maybe early 80's were just like that: a bit crazy and over the top... so the acting was kinda ... hmmm ... nonchalant. But, again, it is a music film, so ... Eight from me.

This movie is a delicious quandary...I'm rating it 10 because that's how much I love it. Now were I to rate it in terms of its overall "quality"? Hmmm...a 6?Would I say it's a "good" movie? Errrmmm...not "good" "per se"....Would I say it's a freaking epic legendary 80s-tacular movie? Baby, you know it! (and THEN some)How can a movie be so bad and soooooooooooooo good at the same time? I think it's Prince, himself...The man has more charisma than the characters have lace gloves and there is just something AMAZING about this movie that defies all rules of "good" cinema. If you like Prince, then I'm sure you've already seen it and you already know if you like it (which you undoubtedly do)..If you don't like Prince...this movie might change your mind! (or make you dislike him even more - I mean Prince is Prince. You either love him (like I do) or you don't)...If you want an entertaining romp through the glam 80s "club scene" of Minneapolis, then you'll probably love it.I whole-heartedly recommend it to EVERYONE...but then again, that's just me ;)PS: On the other hand, there's no doubt about the badassery of the MUSIC in this film: 11/10. One of the best pop albums ever.
