A movie made from Stephen King's short story 'Quitters, Inc', that's the idea I had about No Smoking before watching it. Well.. yeah and NO. 'Quitters, Inc' is about a guy, a chain smoker, who gets mixed up with a company that will stop any kind of addiction by any means. The movie has somewhat the same concept. And though it begins as the short story, on the way it begins to turn in to something else. Reality and fantasy gets mixed up. Dreams and reality begins to merge. The movie transforms into David Lynch from Stephen King. From the Story, Direction, Cinematography, Music to the use of surrealism, fantasy, dreams, reality, fear and humor are great. Most importantly, just like a Lynch movie, this can't be summed up to a single meaning. We can accept what's shown just as that, (even that can be explained in few different ways). Or we could find out some hidden stories inside the symbols. No smoking is not just a film, it's an experience that one can feel and understand in any way they want.A mind numbing surrealistic neo-noir psychological thriller.. A Lynchian masterpiece..Have seen more than 600 Hindi movies in nearly every genre there is, Never have seen a Hindi movie like this.10/10

No Smoking is made with good intentions and the filmmaker is desperately trying to do something completely out of the box in this movie. However, the movie which has several themes such as surrealism, fantasies and dream sequences, makes the viewer completely distant from the underlying meaning of it all. It is frustrating to watch a movie and not comprehend the whole point of the story. The cinematography is good and John Abraham does a decent job in the lead role. The movie seems to be inspired by Mulholland Drive which is another movie that can drive the viewer insane with its ambiguous storyline. Even though Anurag Kashyap must be praised for trying to make experimental movies, the movie must give the viewer some clue as to what the truth is. The movie will be frustrating and disappointing for most of the people. Hence, stay away from it unless you are looking for something completely different from the usual crap.

Simply a masterpiece of abstract concept.I did not get the meaning in my first watch but interlinking all the events together I could get the idea behind the movie in the subsequent times. The set, the story line, the cast everything was so fascinating that each time I watch I find it something out of this world, something really new. It is evident that none can bet on box office success of such kind of movies in India but these movies are not made for box-office.These movies are made for the tiny number of viewers who can think beyond their imagination. The film was heavily panned by Indian critics. It was criticized as "one big puzzle that refuses to get solved".And so it was stated as "Very disappointing". But my question for them is "Are our lives not some unsolved big puzzles??" And all unsolved puzzles do have solutions.

After watching this movie first thing came in my mind was 'Dante's Inferno'. Movie is like a pre-renaissance theological epic.Movie proceeds with metaphor to metaphor. At Some points these metaphors are logical and touching but some times Its just perception so hard to get. as far I understood Movie is about Indian philosophy of soul and Nirvana which also includes hell and heaven concept. Cigarette is metaphor for Lust or 'Kaam' which lie between incertitude of Moral and Immoral. Baba bangali is God or angel who want to purify soul from lust to help him achieve nirvana but also give him hell if fails to do so. John is protagonist who has different set of morals fabricated with ego. Like all God baba bangali is has very nature of God : totalitarian, part kind, part terrible etc. And understanding of morality and immorality of God is just polarization of perception(like always). For Baba all those thing which majority think Good/Bad is Good/Bad. stubborn behavior of John provoke Baba's wrath on him.... Rest is just viewer's perception what he want to see in this movie
