Night of the Demon Trailers

American professor John Holden arrives in London for a conference on parapsychology only to discover that the colleague he was supposed to meet was killed in a freak accident the day before. It turns out that the deceased had been investigating a cult lead by Dr. Julian Karswell. Though a skeptic, Holden is suspicious of the devil-worshiping Karswell. Following a trail of mysterious manuscripts, Holden enters a world that makes him question his faith in science.

I saw this on the silver screen as either The Night or the Curse of the Demon. It's a shame that the monster is shown on the illustration of the DVD, as I had no idea what I was in for in 1958. In those days, the screen was so large that even a black and white scary movie was, well, scary. I was 8 at-the-time. It's a British "B" movie with a pedigree. Written by the accomplished man who wrote 6 classics for Hitchcock. Directed by the French Director of "The Cat People". The dragon-like demon appears only twice in the film and holds it's victim in it's claw while belching fire. No one else ever sees it. Many other "spooky" things in the film to keep it interesting. A sudden windstorn, a seance, a cat that momentarily transforms into a vicious beast, footprints in the woods with a fiery cloud. Shortened, no doubt, for excessive dialog by American standards but worth seeing (somewhat) restored. Probably too slow and tame for modern viewers today but otherwise a lot of fun and truly scary without being gory.

I like Dana Andrews. Then, I like these type of pictures where there are ancient writings, curses and things we don't understand so we mock and dismiss them until they come a calling. Well that is what happens here. All investigators for the paranormal start out as skeptics until they have an experience they cannot explain. Here, you can explain it and be glad about it as it applies to you unless it wants to know you better. The Demon does a great job of scare-doom tactics and doesn't bother anyone until it is summoned usually for bad reasons. What I find interesting that you have a set of rules under which it comes and if not followed can backfire and if followed someone ends up having a real bad day. This movie covers that and more too. It moves at a steady pace and yes there is a pesky woman, séances, warnings and for 1957, this was to be part of a double feature. Watch this because it is a....

Jacques Tourneur's "Night of the Demon" is a classic horror tale which is notable for more than just scares: it was proof that horror and film noir do go together.Film noir invariably depicts a protagonist lost in a conspiracy of corruption that he is powerless to understand. You aren't supposed to be able to comprehend the plots of "The Maltese Falcon" and "The Big Sleep". That's deliberate: the main character can't understand it either, and our own confusion allows us to empathise. In "Night of the Demon", which is incorrectly regarded as a straight horror tale, despite coming from the man who brought us "Out of the Dark", another film noir masterpiece, we see a hero familiar from noir: a hardened, skeptical investigator who is tired of the world he is best suited for: one of illusion, gullibility and the strong preying on the weak. Sound familiar? He even wears a fedora. The difference is that our hero investigates the paranormal, but he is no Fox Mulder. He is a dyed-in-the-wool skeptic, incredulous like all film-noir heroes. He talks and acts like one who's seen it all; it doesn't take a genius to predict that the case at the centre of "Night of the Demon" will surprise even him."Night of the Demon" is brilliantly shot by the master Tourneur, and features special effects that still look impressive today. It moves along superbly, and has several fantastic set pieces. It's an unmissable horror classic.

Night Of The Demon its a British films that deals with subjects such as witchery, satanism, skepticism and more, the film relies on suspense and its chilling atmosphere rather than having a monster killing people , actually the monster appears at the very beginning, many people say that they showed it too early, but I think that it makes the movie better, because for the rest of the film you are waiting for him to appear at the final act and the payoff its great. The movie its actually very chilling at some points, I am not scared of any movie but this one make me cringe a bit at the very end, when the demon looks kinda of real for a second. The film says a lot about superstitions and skepticism, subjects I found to be very interesting.Overall, the film works at many levels, it shows the monster at the beginning but it actually uses that to its benefit, the characters are very likable, the acting its great and the effects are great too.Definitely recommended.
