After leading his men into an ambush and witnessing all of their deaths "Senior Inspector Chan Kwok-Wing" (Jackie Chan) turns to alcohol to relieve his pain and guilt. Soon he becomes totally useless and nobody wants to have anything to do with him. Then one day while passed out in an alley he finds that a young policeman "Frank Cheng" (Nicholas Tse) has volunteered to work with him in order to help locate the gang that killed those police officers. Not only that but for some unknown reason he has complete faith in Senior Inspector Chan even when everybody else has none. Unfortunately, catching this gang isn't going to be at all easy. Now rather than reveal any more of this movie I will just say that I thought that this was possibly Jackie Chan's best film to date. Naturally, being a Jackie Chan film it has plenty of action. However, although it has some comedy here and there this film also has some serious and dark moments as well which gave this movie an added dimension not seen in most of his pictures. Be that as it may, I liked this particular movie and I have rated it accordingly.

A Hero cop accidentally leads his team into a trap from which is the only survivor. Drowning his guilt in booze, he is eventually assigned a new younger partner who turns out to have his own secrets. If you expect some comedy elements and big stunts, then New Police Story is disappointment. The movie is full of drama and serious acting. Sure there is a few fight scenes. Usually Jackie Chan movies are "one man shows" but in this movie Hong Kong's young stars got good roles and maybe done better job than Chan. Example Daniel Wu (from many JC movies) did good performance. For action movie there aren't not much action. For me it was good thing that there was more drama showed that Chan can act. Even that there was a bit too much crying scenes but overall New Police Story is very good Hong Kong movie. It was better than most Jackie Chan Hollywood films.

While not the actors best work, "New Police Story" is a solid action flick that is better than Chan's Hollywood films.I just read a review that talked about half-hearted action sequences, and I'm wondering which film they watched. There isn't much action in this film compared to Chan's early work, but the action IS top-notch - exactly what I would have expected and more(only maybe not enough of it). If anything is half-hearted it is the emotional aspects of this film which are terribly under-developed and ineffective. If there's any other gripe about this film - it is the slow-pacing of the films first hour.Daniel Wu is a good adversary(as he also showed in "The Shinjuku Incident"), but this film is kind of stuck in between the emotional and action themes. It would have been better to put more effort in one direction or the other. The film has good production values, good action sequences, a solid climax, and, of course, Jackie Chan, but the films' emotional aspects leave a lot to be desired, a lot! That puts this right in the middle in terms of Chan Action Flicks. As good as First Strike and Operation Condor, just above SUpercop 2 and Mr.Nice Guy, and a clear step below Rumble in the Bronx, Who Am I, and Supercop. The film is sort of a novelty because it's the last decent Hong Kong action flick that Jackie made. Everything since has been Hollywood crap, or films that do not showcase the physical capabilities and risks that put Jackie on the map. Today he's too busy being 'serious' or 'funny' to make more films like this. His age surely has something to do with that, and in that aspect, you cannot blame him. You can only wish that he could make 20 more 'average' films like this.Enjoy it for what it is - maybe the last in a long line of Hong Kong Action flicks starring Jackie Chan and his jaw-dropping stunts.I'm truly torn between 5 and 6.54/100 You'll like this if you liked:Operation Condor, First Strike, and Crime Story.

There you go, a bunch of chumpy rich kids, robbing banks and killing cops like old-time Rambo. HK police are so lame and unprofessional that they let an impersonator walks in and out the police headquarter like an Wal-mart. Oh, did I mention that they also let the lead antagonist walk in the police headquarter with a bomb in his hand, so that he can give it to Jackie's girlfriend and subsequently disfigure her. And you got corny melodramas. Tons of them, actually, mainly about Jackie weeping over his dead peers, and lead villain's profound hate for his police commissioner dad. And I don't even want to recall more about this terrible flop. Shun it, avoid it like plague.
