I was looking forward to this movie due to the high reviews and known cast. To my disappointment, this movie had a boring plot and no climax. Sure, if you're a 20s history buff you might found encounters with Picasso exciting- but eh, I could pass. The movie starts out with clips of Paris and music.. which continues for FIVE MINUTES. Why? This should've been my first sign. Then it goes on to explain the main character's downhill relationship with his fiancé while they are visiting Paris. They run into her old college lover (and his girlfriend) in a fancy restaurant. Who just runs into an American friend in another country??! So then you're like wtf is this movie about?! Eventually you find out the main character can time travel at midnight in Paris (wow- creative title). He gets to meet his idols which really isn't that exciting and for the most part isn't impactful. I guess he gets insight on his book and learns the lesson that people glorify time that isn't the present. This- and a girl he meets in the 20s who bounces from guy to guy and leaves him after a whole 5 minutes of them being together to live in another time period- convinces him to leave his life and move the Paris. Obviously he leaves his fiancé who the movie paints to be mean and a cheater. But- this guy literally went out all night, refused to do family stuff with her while on vacation and tried to steal her pearl earrings to give to the 20s girl. Then the movie just kinda ends. Save your valuable time answers watch something else. This movie was awful.

Most of the juries seem to have awarded this movie prizes for the wrong reasons: for appreciating a dirty, ugly city and bringing its expired myth of romance back in the forefront. The story is very good, typical WA. The execution is also very good. I mean this is the first movie where I can see Owen Wilson and not await the punch in the face. Yet everything is for the story. Sadly the story fizzes at the end. Sure, they all discover things about themselves. And compared with other movies about film makers (like 8 1/2) this is centered around the story and not the ego of the given film maker. Amazing. Yet I don't like the ending.

RELEASED IN 2011 and written & directed by Woody Allen, "Midnight in Paris" chronicles events when an American writer (Owen Wison), his hot fiancée (Rachel McAdams) and her parents visit Paris. Incredibly, the nostalgic writer finds himself going back to the 1920s each midnight and meeting iconic artist/writers. Michael Sheen plays a "pedantic" academic.Allen's movies are the perfect antidote to conventional CGI-laden "blockbuster" drivel. "Midnight in Paris" is magical because (1.) Paris is such a charming city, which is thoroughly showcased, including the picturesque prologue, and (2.) the plot involves a fantasy element. Concerning the latter, there were 2 or 3 scenes where I didn't buy what was going on, but it was only for a moment and the movie quickly recovered (remember: movies are supposed to "take you away" to another place/time/situation and make you believe it through cinematic wizardry). In any case, the morals of the story are commendable and effectively driven home. Woody has a good eye for women without resorting to sleaze. And the charismatic McAdams is showcased in all her jaw-dropping glory; modest Léa Seydoux too, to a lesser degree. The ravishing Marion Cotillard is also on hand in a significant role, but her beauty is diminished by the 1920's look/apparel she's straddled with, but that's not really a problem. THE MOVIE RUNS 1 hour & 34 minutes and was shot in Paris. ADDITIONAL CAST: Tom Hiddleston, Alison Pill, Corey Stoll, Marcial Di Fonzo Bo, Adrien Brody, David Lowe, Olivier Rabourdin and Kathy Bates. GRADE: B+
