In 1983, the Disney company was at its lowest point--or darn close. The once-great studio appeared to be very stagnant and nearing the end of its run. Little did folks realize that a rebirth was awaiting in the mid-late 1980s--with great cartoons such as "The Great Mouse Detective", "Who Framed Roger Rabbit" and "The Little Mermaid". So, it is nice to see "Mickey's Christmas Carol"--as the artwork is just lovely and shows that the studio still had it. Because of this, it's a very impressive film--and worth seeing. Now this IS a qualified endorsement--as despite the great animation and the use of classic characters, the subject matter is dull stuff indeed. After all, there must have been about a bazillion different versions of Dickens' "A Christmas Carol". In fact, to me it's like a lost opportunity where Disney COULD have achieved greatness with this cartoon but because of the overly familiar subject matter it is just 'nice'. Nice wouldn't save the studio.

This is a very nice adaptation from Disney of the classic "A Christmas Carol." It stars Mickey, Donald and Daisy as some of the main Carol characters, playing Bob Cratchit, Nephew Fred and Belle. Ebenezer Scrooge is voiced by Mister Ed actor Alan Young, and Scrooge will take on a more significant future role as "Scrooge McDuck" in the cartoon show, Ducktales. This classic Charles Dicken's story is portrayed very well in this cartoon, very touching and moving about gruff Ebenezer trying to mend his ways after being visited by the Christmas ghosts of the Past, Present and Future. The spirit of Christmas and goodwill is thoroughly emphasized in this movie and you could definitely see a special Disney touch to this feature.I'm sure the kids and the entire family will enjoy watching this cartoon short during Christmas time.Grade A

I haven't seen "Mickey's Christmas Carol" in probably twenty years, but I basically remember what happens. I guess that there's nothing wrong with it, although "A Christmas Carol" doesn't seem like the type of story that Disney should adapt. I always liked the Looney Tunes far better than any of the Disney characters; I can picture Bugs Bunny turning this story into a series of New York-style one-liners. The end of the sequence with the Ghost of Christmas Future was a little intense for a children's movie. My favorite adaptation of this story was "Scrooged", with Bill Murray as a mean-spirited TV executive. In the years since I watched these sorts of cartoons, I have learned that Alan Young (Wilbur on "Mister Ed") provided Scrooge McDuck's voice. It's weird to picture the talking horse's owner affecting a Scottish accent to voice a robber baron duck. I still prefer to remember Young as Wilbur, partly because I've always use "Mister Ed" as an excuse to see Connie Hines (who played Carol); now there was a HOT BABE!!!! Anyway, it's a worthy adaptation.Yeah, I would have expected him to be taller. Even Peter Dinklage is taller.

"Mickey's Christmas Carol" is an okay Christmas tale, but not more than that: okay. I feel that this cartoon doesn't fully have that Christmas magic or spirit we are used to, not to mention that it is too dark for a Christmas tale.I think that the whole sequences with ghosts ruin this short a little: a Goofy ghost, a Willie the Giant's ghost (what's the point of that?) and a Pete's ghost in a cemetery (an extremely dark sequence which children must be aware because it may be too frightening for them).Basically this short focus on Scrooge McDuck, someone so selfish and greedy that he doesn't give any donations for the poor. Despite this, deep down inside Mr. Scrooge isn't that heartless, even if he doesn't show off that. At the end, maybe because of the traumatizing experiences he had with the 3 mentioned ghosts, he ends up feeling the Christmas spirit and gives donations for the poor ones. This cartoons also features other popular Disney starts, such as Minnie Mouse, Mickey Mouse, Donald Duck, Jiminy Cricket and Goofy (although all of the characters have different names here). This was also the last cartoon which Donald Duck was voiced by the legendary Clarence Nash. The story of this cartoon is "so-so", there isn't actually much humor (unlike the usual on Disney classics) and the artwork isn't among the finest from Disney. In my opinion, there are other Christmas animated movies/shorts that I recommend much more than this because they are much better choices: "The Night Before Christmas" (Tom & Jerry), "Pluto's Christmas Tree", "The Polar Express" and the Silly Symphonies "Santa's Workshop" and "The Night Before Christmas", for example.
