Man on Wire Trailers

On August 7th 1974, French tightrope walker Philippe Petit stepped out on a high wire, illegally rigged between New York's World Trade Center twin towers, then the world's tallest buildings. After nearly an hour of performing on the wire, 1,350 feet above the sidewalks of Manhattan, he was arrested. This fun and spellbinding documentary chronicles Philippe Petit's "highest" achievement.

You got to know a little more about Phillipe ' s training as a high wire performer. The movie was very accurate to the documentary, but I don't think it's something I would watch many times. Sort of like how the moment in 1974 was a once-in-a-lifetime experience, the story would be more exciting if I was there, but I wasn't born yet.

The guy who accomplished this, is not only insane but he's also a great storyteller. The way he describes the tiny details of what was going through his head during this whole thing is very enjoyable. This documentary is about the guy who illegally walked on a tightrope between the two world trade center buildings.

It is remarkably melancholic, the ending leaving you with the bitter-sweet taste of victory at the cost of perhaps something greater, but there's also a strange joy found in this slightly 'insane' man's veraciously vivid, infectiously excited passion as he recollects what is essentially a heist, only it doesn't end in a theft it ends in, as he and his friends put it, a gift. It's a bizarre goal to have and yet you wholly understand it because the documentary not only pulls you into its narrative but also into the maniacally single-minded mind of the motivated wire-walker at its centre, wrapping you up in his wild, wide-eyed dream so you don't wonder why anyone would want to do it but rather why anyone wouldn't, and its this that keeps the piece working even through its weirdest turns, when things suddenly turn sad, spiritual or even sexual. 7/10

Man On Wire is possibly one of the best known stories of this century, telling about the amazing tightropist who crossed from the Twin Towers. However, it may be too well known, which makes this documentary dwindle in essence, giving us a prolonged account of the tightropist coming to his passion of crazy stunts. But in saying that, for those who don't know the story, this will be an exciting gem to view, giving a superbly directed documentary and some fascinating accounts of the illegal, yet not bad, stunt. Interesting to say the least, but all you want to see is the footage of a man crossing a wire 400 metres above the ground. You will feel terrified at stages, and the way they pulled off this daredevil trick feels like a real Oceans Eleven escapee. In all honesty though, not much is left to the imagination of you know the story beforehand, but still an exciting true story of one of the most feared phobias ever.
