With all the horror films of late it is so refreshing to see a movie like Lord of Tears..an indie movie shot in Scotland it's low budget makes great use of atmosphere and settings..the sense of unease and slow burn build up to nightmarish events are gripping and tense..i loved the connection between the 2 leads and they carried the film brilliantly. The Owlman certainly looks good and is very simple but just the way he looms and observes is very unsettling ..what i love about low budget indie movies is that no matter how much money is involved they prove that if you have story, vision and can be unique you have a good product..i was blown away by this!
... View MoreAtmosphere, yes. Great locations, yes. Interesting enough premise, yes. And I didn't notice that the lead male couldn't act until "Eve" showed up. She can act, but at the community theater level. Lordy, when she said "I'm from the South" in that "I'm not from the South and I don't think I've ever been there" accent it was over. Oh, did you know she trained as a dancer? Well, golly, there's a scene where she spins. It's just all fluff and stiff moments with decent locales, some nice nature shots, and a MYSTERY!
... View MoreI remember seeing the promotional videos on YouTube about Owlman, and was utterly creeped out by him. That one bloke who collapses to the floor after seeing him? That'd be me. The claws. Oh, the claws. Now I've just made the horrendous mistake of watching the film. The acting from both leads is laughable. Alexandra Hulme's performance got on my nerves within minutes, and once I'd had enough of her, I started surfing videos on my phone so I wouldn't have to watch her. I love slow burn suspense films, and if there are bizarre and trippy images in them, so much the better. A lot of said trippy scenes and colouring of this film reminded me of The Ring (American version). You're left feeling like you just took LSD, and its washed out and dreary, lending a sense of dread. This is one of the few good things that I can say about this film, the cinematography is amazing. However, these scenes soon got repetitive and boring. The score is also very good, but one mistake they make is that music is played when there's no need for it, usually during dialogue and you can't hear what they're saying. Very annoying. Way before the end of he film, I no longer gave a hoot (fnar fnar) about any of the characters or the plot, I just wanted it to finish so at least I didn't entirely waste the cost of it. Terrible waste of time and a huge disappointment in what could have been an incredible cinematic experience.
... View MoreWell, the propaganda was strong on this one. Not only 10 star spam on IMDb, but external critics puffed it up as well. The exteriors and some of the interiors look good, but the weaknesses in the story telling make it almost unwatchable.I know it's low budget, but there really is no excuse for the lead actor and the painfully bad exchanges with the lead actress. The dialogue is on the nose and often embarrassing. In one long, excruciating early scene over the dinner table it's like they're playing ping-pong with dumplings. At 30 mins I was ready to turn off.As for pace, at 15 mins I noticed the time - bad sign. We had wasted most of it on a simple introduction. That accounts for overrunning 90 mins, but also the climax is drawn out over half an hour. The owl does create an effect from afar, but its first appearance reminded me of something from Sesame Street and the voice over was cheesy. In the end I didn't care about the mystery. This is the kind of simple story Hammer did much better 50 years ago in period costume. Some of the music was overbearing - say, in the first scene in the cellar, when the sound of dripping water would have created better effect. Some of the sung music was good, especially the track over the end credits.ps. I see a gang of six is patrolling this thread for nasteez. LOL.
