Lila is the good and Eve is the bad. Performances that is. Somewhat long in telling and several boring moments don't help this overdone melodrama. Jennifer Lopez as Eve was definitely mis-cast. Not much depth in her nor strength. Just a busy body giving orders to a distraught Lila. Lila on the other hand, Viola Davis, gave a touching and beautiful performance, considering the script was ordinary. I can't say when but along the way this film became a soap opera in the typical LMN way. I felt bad for Davis as she really gave it all she had, which was brilliant with lines that didn't match the passion she exuded. Too bad. Most of the remaining cast members said their lines but were no match to Davis as a mother who lost her son due to street violence. I wonder if we didn't have Eve in this story if it might have been a better film with Davis carrying it all on her shoulders. I do feel Lopez dragged it down. And I like Jennifer, just not in this type of role. Check her out in "Enough". Brilliant.
... View MoreWhen I am really into a movie, I can watch it numerous times without getting bored. This is one of those movies where I watch it once and probably never again. It wasn't horrible, in fact, it was decent. The twist was nice but there came a point where it was almost expected. Luckily the expectation came right before the twist, so it wasn't as if I was meandering through this movie knowing what was going to happen. To my surprise, Jennifer Lopez actually did a great job. I'd give her acting a 8/10. Viola Davis does phenomenal, as per usual - 10/10. There were moments when the two worked off of fierce chemistry. They did great together. I rarely ever comment on the realistic aspects of a movie (whether they're realistic or not,) because movies have a certain magic about them where certain things shouldn't hold true to our reality. But one thing that got under my skin a bit was the fact that Lila got off for all of the crimes she committed. Never, in any type of story, would a detective walk away from the murders of seven people, whether those people were drug dealers or not. In this movie, there didn't need to be a "happy ending." The story would've flowed better and left a better lasting impression had the detective actually done his job and arrested Lila for the murders and crimes she committed. The message would've shifted from "a mother scorned" to "our actions have consequences, no matter how noble we think our actions are." This is why I give it an 7 out of 10, and this is the reason I can really only watch this movie once in my lifetime. The ending could've been much greater, but since the acting was on par, I'll give this movie a pass.
... View MoreI found this on Netflix streaming, my wife viewed the trailer and decided it was "too dark" for what she wanted to watch so I watched it alone.I can't say too much before the SPOILERS section below, but it is in Atlanta mostly in an area where lots of drug dealing goes on at night on the street corners. One night a teenage boy is walking home and was shot and killed in a drive-by shooting. Was he the target, or was he just in the wrong place? The police have a number of these to investigate and seem to be bogged down. Meanwhile the grieving mother, Lila, goes to support group meetings where she and other mothers offer each other support. But Eve catches her eye after one meeting, and together they devise a different plan, one to track down and eliminate the drug boss who is responsible for the killings. There are some shootings but never are they sensationalized. Yes the story is dark but we can identify with the characters. Jennifer Lopez gets a lot of criticism from some quarters but she in fact is a fine actress and is good as Eve. Viola Davis is Lila and as always gives a great performance.SPOILERS follow: In a theme borrowed from 'Fight Club', Eve is in fact not real, only the alter ego of Lila. A common shot is to have Eve right behind a hesitant Lila, egging her on to do what needs to be done. While Lila is non-violent and cringes when she finds a handgun in her son's backpack, Eve is ready to hunt down and kill the bad guys. In the end she succeeds and Eve disappears as Lila gains more confidence in her mission. The cops strongly suspect Lila in several murders but each woman in the support group start to come forward to say Lila was with them when the several killings occurred. It appears that she would never be charged and at least THAT drug boss is dead.
... View MoreThis Lifetime movie is watchable if imperfect. There are some things going for this mother's revenge thriller. Of course there are some unrealistic fantasy elements in the revenge sequences. It's not meant to be 100% realistic. It's laughable the way all the drug dealing baddies are dispatched. If you remember the Charles Bronson movies they all had this amusing ludicrous moments.Viola Davis is a most effective actress and you feel her emotions of grief and depression. Jennifer Lopez in a non glam get up is competent - this is no JLo vehicle.Overall worth one watch.
