Kissing a Fool Trailers

An egotistical television personality enlists the assistance of his best friend in putting the fidelity of his fiancé to the test in this amiable comedy of the sexes. Told in flashback, the film takes a familiar love-triangle scenario and gives it a bitter twist. With a bride who seems too good for either suitor, the film is sustained by one question - who will she choose?

I always gave it the benefit of the doubt. Romantic comedies usually can be good if done right. I wouldn't think this film is a total waste, but the setup, when you think about it, is kind of hard to believe. Yet I don't think it is something so bad where it had to be a total box-office disaster. (When it was released, it performed very badly therefore only being in wide release for a couple of weeks and unable to crack the Top Ten). Most of what happens in the movie is told from Bonnie Hunt's character. She basically explains to a couple of people, whom one of them is a guy who is quite attractive and delightful (don't know his name however. He was the big guy). Anyway while at the wedding of the bride and groom, they're going over about how the character's all ended up. She is a publisher of a writer named Jay (Jason Lee) who suddenly falls for his editor, who is involved with his best friend Max (David Schwimmer). Max wants to test how faithful his girlfriend really is by getting Jay to somehow seduce her. If you follow movies, it'd be easy to understand that David Schwimmer is basically trying to play against type, with his bad boy player type character but he basically comes off as sleazy and somewhat creepy. It doesn't make a whole lot of sense that someone like the editor, whose character is played by Mili Avital, would fall for someone like that and rather quickly too. To me, the thing that works about this movie is Jason Lee. It's almost hard to believe that a year before this was released, he played Banky in Chasing Amy. I thought he was a promising talent, but unfortunately Hollywood, and neither audiences saw it that way. But all of this was a long ways before those unfortunately successful Alvin and the Chipmunks disasters. I like Jason Lee as a romantic lead and it works here. He is utterly charming. I think in the end, his editor Samantha eventually falls for him, which is something that probably would have been more believable had it happened earlier on. By the end though, the movie pretty much loses any kind of momentum.

This was a great plot, but this filming really missed something for me. As a romantic comedy, it can be enjoyed, but it doesn't blow me away like the big ones do. The cruelty was out of place, particularly the scene after Sam's and Max's first date. Individual scenes made sense and ran smoothly, but the whole film didn't have much cohesion for me. I found it difficult to believe Jay really had a relationship with the model Natasha, so much so that he was quite despondent after the breakup. I did actually like the sliminess of David Schwimmer's character. His Band Of Brothers role is the only one I can remember in which he performed even better. Mili Avatal as Sam showed no warmth or sincerity, I'm sorry to say. This movie always leaves me wishing I had chosen another film to watch.

Altogether the premise of this movie doesn't seem all that exciting, now that I really think about it there is not much to this movie but both myself and my sister have an odd obsession with it.It's funny, granted Jason Lee is always funny but the cast puts out some great performances. Not many people have seen this and the reactions to it are mixed. There are some parts with really great narrative and the story moves along quite fluidly. The characters are over the top and make for a very fun movie (Max, Natasha etc.).By no means one of the great films or anything, but definitely one of my favs for sure.

I'm usually pretty cynical about love stories. But Kissing a Fool is fabulous. Like previously stated, Bonnie Hunt and Jason Lee are so talented and funny. Jason is completely beleivable in his role and makes everything feel so human. The scenes where he reunites with ex- "Natasha (natasia)" are so perfect and funny. For anyone who has ever been in a complicated relationship, or anyone who has been jilted by a bad romantic comedy before, see this movie. Just rent it on a night when you don't want something heavy. It's pretty good.
