Kids is a great movie about how kids behave away from their parents and in a group. the movie makes no judgments it just observes a group of kids as they go about their day. Larry Clark (Director) and Harmony Korine (Writer) did a great job keeping the movie simple. The movie was well shot it has a dark and gritty look. The language was vulgar but seemed authentic. I though the scenes of the boys and girls discussing sex was well done the cutting back and forth between the two discussions. I also thought the park scene was done well as well, especially the use of music in the fight scene. The cast was good. It was made up of mostly non actors or unknown actors. There was wonderful performances by the four main actors Leo Fitzpatrick, Justin Pierce, Chloe Sevigny, and Rosario Dawson. Kids is not a movie for everyone it is dark and at times uncomfortable to watch especially the opening scene and the last scene. It does however tackle some tough subjects, and shows behavior when you don't think through the consequences. It is a great experimental movie anyone interested in movies should see it. I have seen it a few times and find it more interesting each time. It is Larry Clarks greatest work.
... View MoreI was fourteen years old when "Kids" came out, so there was no chance of my seeing this at the height of its notoriety. Why did it take me twenty years? Couldn't tell you, but I can say it's more than a little disappointing. It's not the shocking movie I was led to believe, but more like sloppy and confused. The whole point of this is to watch a select group of children engage in drink, drugs, and reckless sex as a lifestyle. Just to show how impersonal these characters are, we come away knowing the names of three: Telly, the serial spoiler of virgins, Casper, his protégé, and Jenny, who's just been diagnosed with HIV (*from* Telly). That's really all you need to know; any other character is just a passing face.My frustration throughout the movie was this: What the hell is the takeaway from all of this? There's no characterization, so I have no reason to care about what happens to these people. The movie's name implies that all kids are (deep down) messed up; but they're not, it's just this subset. If we're supposed to feel bad for the lives of this small group of people, why are they so faceless and ill-defined? Why is the one sympathetic character raped in the final moments, only to have the rapist wake up in the morning and ask, "Jesus, what happened?". Is Larry Clark trying to say that he's not repugnant, and it was just the substance abuse talking? So it's an anti-drinking movie? What the hell is your message? I wasn't outraged like I'd expected, and maybe that's due to the passage of twenty years' time. And I can't say how "real" this was - goodness knows I didn't grow up around these people. I'm certainly not going to claim any moral majority righteousness here. But there's only exploitation and shock value in place of actual real-life characters that demand my attention.Moronic, not horrifying.3/10
... View MoreAn excellent account on youth. Maybe it's the extreme end of youth, with sex and drugs, but an accurate account of those types. This film isn't trying to label all kids like these ones but label kids like these ones as kids like these ones, no sugar coating it. It's disturbing, it's full on and it's as raw as possible without making it a snuff children's film. Truly an excellent piece by Larry Clarke, finally someone who is not afraid to do what he wants and does what he pleases. Gritty and raw, there is no escaping the grasp of Kids. A not-so-thoughtful nod to the children of the world, but a realistic one of the hoodlums of society.
... View MoreKids sparked a lot of controversy when it came out because of the age of characters portrayed. It happens in New York although the message screams: "It could happen to you, as well." I was past my teens when i saw Kids and grew up away from the geographical location mentioned above. Although i could relate to most of stuff, there were some moments that didn't work out for me. For example, watching girls discussing oral sex wasn't convincing. On the other hand, it might mean i simply wasn't the target group of the movie. What Kids does well is showing growing up without much parents' involvement in an urban environment. In fact, after watching Kids you might even ask yourself whether you'd want to have children in such a merciless world. In the case that this is the real world, that is.
