All Movies worth a Damn, are simply metaphorically produced. For instance a Boxing movie has NOTHING to do with Boxing, the same message could be conveyed about some guy running a Street Corner Candy Store. I saw "Journey" in '68 when it came out. Right in the middle of Vietnam. Movies about Vietnam DURING the Conflict were taboo....so metaphors were in place. This movie precedes the 1970 Robert Altman great MASH. Although MASH Was a "War" film,it was presented as a "Korean War Movie",however it WAS about Vietnam! "Journey" Touches on naive patriotic "Long-Hairs"(as mentioned and Theme-song within the picture) from Texas, to fight for the Confederacy. THEIR "Journey" consists of Witnessing the Brutality of Slavery, and basic Disillusionment OF the War. This theme coincides with the turbulent 1960's. I liked the movie's Anti-Vietnam/Civil rights messages which seemed to be the main factor in the Film, the absence OF that message would have probably brought Boredom to the screen. So,next time you view this Actually pretty good film...go deep and you'll see ANOTHER Movie.

It is a shame more people will not see this movie. From what I can find out, it has never been released for home viewing. Regardless that the weapons they used were not made until after the Civil War, I would not have known this if I had not read others comments. Its kinda like learning the secrets of magic, it just doesn't matter, you still enjoy watching. Nothing in this movie could be less real than any movie about Custer being a hero! Anyone interested in movies about how bad we did the Indians needs to see "I Buried My Heart at Wounded Knee". What a shame. If anyone has any luck finding "Journey to Shiloh" on video or DVD, I would appreciate them contacting [email protected] Thank-you

While not the best movie ever made, Journey to Shiloh is definitely worth the watch. Seven cowboys travel to war together, finding that away from the open range the world is a contradictory place. I find the year of the movie, 1968, especially relevant. As the boys grow from wide eyed youngsters to hardened men, the viewer finds himself ignoring the lesser qualities of the movie in favor of the story. You could do a lot worse with your time than watching this movie, and afterward you may have a different interpretation of war in general, the American civil war in particular, and at the same time enjoy seeing James Caan and Harrison Ford in the earliest stages of their careers. This movie definitely should be released on DVD.

The book by Will Henry is absolutely terrific. A joy to read; the laconic dialog is realistic, hilarious ... and poignant. The book is available for cheap on eBay and other sites and I recommend it. Of the seven Concho County boys, Buck is drawn most fully; the others are tantalizing sketches. I saw this movie on TV years ago and I'm amazed at its unavailability on video/DVD, esp. given the "future-star" status of its cast. I most remember the stoic Buck soldiering on as each of his friends/comrades met his fate. The naive perception of war by the young finds itself face to to face with reality in this story. It is believable to think that many of the kids who fought in the Civil War marched off with these kinds of notions in their minds.
