Aside from Jelly' "sub basement" - lower than low - self esteem issues I really enjoyed watching this movie. Those of you who grew up watching John Hughes will recognize the parallels. Jelly ends up being a combination of Samantha and Andie, a romantic lead with the neuroses turned up to about 101%. Luke represents the dream love Samantha pined for but is in fact the jerk Andie hated; Floyd is the caricature of Duckie and Mona is a b*tchier version of Iona. I didn't care for Mona's character but her personality was a foil to Jelly's so it worked within the context of the story. The conflict between Floyd's character and Mona's was a bit like a love triangle with both of them vying for Jelly's attention. Some of the plot points were obvious, but still interesting. The movie took the story book John Hughes ending and muddled it just enough so that it wasn't completely corny. A few situations were hard-to-believe but overall I felt like the characters could be real people. I rarely like Indie films but this one I could see myself owning (mostly because I grew up on John Hughes' films, and what girl wouldn't want the ending to Sixteen Candles or Pretty in Pink or even The Breakfast Club?)
