My mom also knew your dad (Ken McElroy) and also said that they portrayed him as a monster in the book and movie. She said he was not one to mess with but he didn't go out of his way to bully people like the book makes him sound like he did. I am truly sorry for your loss. I lived in st Joseph and was born in st Joseph when this took place but was only 11 at the time the events took place. and since my mom was in the hospital recently her and my cousin was talking about this book since my aunt is mentioned in the book. my cousin's mother which is now deceased also. I was curious and ordered the book and I am also curious to see the movie which i have never seen.

Where do I get a copy of this movie? I have not seen this movie for 15 years and I would love to see it again. I grew up in Novinger Missouri about two and a half hours east of Skidmore. I have been telling my family and friends about this movie, because my brother married a girl who's family is from the Skidmore area. They took my brother for a drive down Main Street in Skidmore and he is dieing to see the movie. My dad was MURDERED! Nothing else matters and the way they portrayed him in the movie is sick.I think all of you are sick!Ken was a loving husband and father and doted on all us kids and if anyone wants to say something about him I suggest that you say it to my face.the movie and book are both wrong about a lot of things including how the whole town harassed us kids my mom and sisters and i'm tired of listening to you people talk about him now that he's dead and gone.the movie could have shown him as the person he was but that wasn't going to make the stations any money now was it?and that LE in missouri, you weren't even around then so shut up about it OK?

As this was based on a true incident in a small Missouri town N/E of Springfield, MO, I found it to be 98% factual. The actual actions of the "town bully" were in fact more shocking than the movie portrayed. "Rex's" (the real name of the bully) daughters still live in the area but do not speak of their father. If you can picture the retired football player Larry Czonka playing the part you'd be right on!
