Hardware Wars Trailers

A short film parody of the classic science fiction film Star Wars. It premiered in theaters only seven months after Star Wars and consisted of little more than inside jokes and visual puns that heavily depended upon audience familiarity with the original.

The latter part of the 1970's seemed to breed spoofs (many of them cheap) and "Hardware Wars" was the best, despite being 15 minutes long and having a budget of $1.98. Presented as a movie trailer, "Hardware Wars" recounts about 80% of Lucas' film using cardboard sets, the director's garage, and every concievable household appliance as ray guns, spaceships, light sabres, the nameless "Death Star" waffle iron, even the Imperial stormtroopers and sand people! It's obvious that this film influenced the set design of "Mystery Science Theater 3000", down to the visible wires holding up the spaceships. A great short, and one that needs to be seen by every film student.

I'm a big lover of underground, unpolished, gritty-style fare, and as far as I'm concerned, HARDWARE WARS and BUDGET LIQUOR are the two greatest short films ever made. hands down. HARDWARE WARS, in addition to being a star wars parody, is a super-hip piece of Retro work-- check out all the crazy stock footage, the ancient Art Deco style props, the background tunes, cool little details like the fuzzy dice over the dashboard or the closeups of spedometers, and what you get is an homage to the coolness of yesteryear. (You can really tell that Fosselius is from Frisco)

Talk about your classics! Ernie Fossilus (the Foss from here on out) came up with a cute and creative trailer totally spoofing Star Wars. This gem is so jammed packed with tributes and gags I laugh every time! Not only that, when Star Wars did a re-issue with new special effects, Hardware Wars did the same! Talk about a spoof that just won't die! There's a reason George Lucas calls this his favorite parody. He was so impressed, he even hired the Foss to work on "Return of the Jedi" (Don't believe me, check his entry in IMDb!)This has to be the first, and in my opinion, the best parody ever done. I think the Special Edition was a bit overdone, but on reflection, I think it's PERFECT for the modern day re-release of Star Wars, and goes to prove that sometimes, it's wrong to mess with perfection.Yes, it's only 10 minutes, but it's well worth your time. You'll laugh, you'll cry, you'll kiss $3 goodbye! Well, maybe 15 for the DVD, but you'll be real happy you did.
