*Spoilers ahead* What I loved about the movieMy biggest fear was that I was going to be faced with some heavy duty TV soap opera with people yelling and screeching at the top of their voice in the court, tears from every character, long speeches, annoying soppy dialogues. Instead I was surprised at how subtle the movie was, it has to be SLB's most subtle work. No annoying background music, the dialogues are to the point, witty dialogues from Ethan when you would least expect it and Sofia's tit for tat responses.Aditya Roy Kapoor as Omar: He enters the house as this dorky kid whose only aim is to become the greatest magician in the world and he decides to go to the man who was known to be the best in the business. It's not easy for him because Sofia doubts him from the word go and does not make it easy for him. His interaction with Aishwarya is hilarious- she makes sure he goes through hell and he's determined that he wont let her come in the way of learning magic from Ethan. Aishwarya: Amazing? That is an understatement. After Jodhaa this is my MOST favourite character played by Aishwarya. She does not speak too much but her eyes speak volumes- there is so much pain in her eyes because of her failed married, she loves Ethan but cant express it, She does not want him to die but has no right to speak because she is "just a caretaker". She cares for him like no one else, devoting 12 years of her life- leaving her husband, her house everything for him and she fights for him till the end. Aishwarya is there from the first scene of the movie to the last so yes Ash fans need not worry about anything. She gives a brilliant performance once again and one that can fetch her awards (sahil, your q)For Hrithik I need to run through the dictionary to find words! I don't believe he has any sort of competition from any actor of his generation- the man keeps setting the bar higher and higher with each movie he does. I cannot imagine ANYONE but Hrithik playing Ethan. The kind of detailing he brings into his character, I am yet to see another actor do it. His expressions melt my heart, I wanted to cry when he was crying, just run and hug him when he was in pain but helpless because he couldn't move and no one could hear him. His fear and helplessness when sofia is being physically abused in front of his eyes and he wants to go and help her but cant left me distraught :cryloud: Sigh! His portrayal of Ethan is going to win a million hearts. What I loved the most about Ethan was his positivity- except 2-3 scenes where he is extremely frustrated you can always see him smile through his problems. He falls off the bed but instead of crying about how he cant move he makes a joke of it telling ash that even though his head was on the floor he couldn't see her sexy legs, when the water is falling off the roof in the night and he's frustrated but no one can hear him and come to help him he decides to just play a game with the water takes it easy.
... View MoreI am not a big fan of Bollywood movies, yet here I am, leaving this review in hopes to lift the fog on one of what I wouldn't hesitate calling, a genius masterpiece.Guzaarish is a story that will challenge EVERY stereotype and preconception about the style of Bollywood filming and narratives; the lack of dancing and merry singing, the lack of colors and peachy happy endings, and onto the real elements: the very engaging story, the epic heart-felt acting and the story- line at its best and finest honesty.This is a brilliantly successful magician who decided, after an accident, that his life is not worth another day, and despite the unconditional Love and support that surround him, he is so willing to defy the Law in hopes to be granted the HONOR of ending his miserably unhappy life.But the story is not about whether or not Ethan has been granted the earthly legal consent to end his life, it is much more than that.The story is very engaging and witty enough to invest in the viewers emotions, yes it does. There's a "magic" about the writing that captivates the breath- taking out of the viewers to delicately invite them to LIVE the life inside the heart and through the eyes of Ethan. There is this Indian magic spirit in the writing that allows us all to be part of a life of Ethan, to love and sympathize with him, to feel at awe with his magician skills, to care for him and want his life to be even longer, then to be faced with a personal desire of his to end his life. We, then, are left clueless, as well as Sofia and the rest.The writing has made a decision to make us mourn the loss of Ethan while he is alive, with happy tears, compassion, sympathy and Love. And to do that, Sofia, Omar and the rest are there to represent those feelings for us, at least, to transmit those feelings to Ethan.And while death is inevitable, and the truest truth of this life, it remains hard to cry and/or celebrate Ethan's life, simply because those around him have selflessly joined his desire to end his misery with the most enchanting, honoring and noblest party there is.If this movie could teach morals, it would undeniably be the one about, death and Life, about how we are so preoccupied with death coming that we forgot to rejoice the Life that offers itself with each sun rise.Rejoice Life even if you are nothing but a heart-beat away from the biggest journey, Ethan made that very possible and JOYFUL, writing books, hosting a radio show to inspire others, teaching a young magician and finally, ending life with the most beautiful Love story there is. {YOU DO NOT WANT TO MISS THIS PART, I PROMISE!!!!}
... View MoreI am watching this movie after 5 years. Somehow, th topic of a paraplegic seemed dark and depressing and therefore I avoided watching this movie. But this movie is not about pontificating on paraplegics. It is about the best looking actor in Mumbai coming on his own in a role that celebrates a once great life and now remains a pale shadow of his great past - and suffers immensely while fighting through his day to day challenges, being dependent on someone. I salute Sanjay Leela Bhansali, Aishwariya and most importantly Hrithik for his best role ever. Overall the movie grabs your attention for the entire run and one feels that there could have been a little more definition around the Siddiqui character and his father. Highly recommended.
... View MoreGuzaa-rash Sanjay Leela Bhansali should give more emotions into the scripts and the actors than the frames. This director is focused mainly on the art of the frames and their colors. Always inspired from several films (Black was inspired from The miracle worker, HDDCS from Woh Saat Din, Sawariyan from White nights ), This movie lifts several scenes and the major part of plot of the nurse and a lawyer friend from 'The Sea Inside' , the tragic accident due to magical rivalry from 'The Prestige' to Hritik Roshan's look from 'My Left foot'.The movie opened very poorly showing Aishwarya removing curtains with a overdone fake makeup of such a deep red lip-sticks that made her a misfit and a poor judgment. Bhansali once a good storyteller, needs a real script justifying the characters and the end of the story. Aishwarya's performance was pity and you may wonder that it's from the same director who gave her a fantastic look and lift in HDDCS. She failed to show the emotions and still has an influx of portraying a beauty. Her moans were as fake as it could be, will surely give Junior AB some nightmare.There were so many tears and emotional scenes (on screen) but none of them will give single goose bump or a wet eyelid. The movie missed the connection with audiences. The reason for a quadriplegic to die looks so kiddish the very next second he cracks a witty line and smiles. The whole plot is like a half baked cake done with some great icing. The courtroom and courtroom was indigestible and added more weakness. Shernaz patel and Suheil Seth were quite OK in their little roles. However, much hyped junior actors Aditya Roy Kapoor and Monikangana Dutta failed to deliver any expression. The blunt look on their face and an unnecessary casting took most of the film's precious moments. While the lyricist Vibhu Puri has a shade of Gulzar, with the lines of Sau Gram Zindagi and A.M. Turaz's Udi is worth listening. Another song "roses are red" at the funeral was well sung and composed. Although Bhansali didn't do a great music composition like the way he did in the previous films. The song 'Sau gram Zindagi' has a shade of yesteryear.Coming to Hritik- the actor was good enough for intense emotions and failed miserably on the subtle performances.All the magic were unreal and full of dances. The Director was out of bounds while showing the magic in dance/art form and it was too straight from the dream world. The patchy flashback took the content from the scripts. Kudos to Hritik for choosing the challenging role, but who wouldn't?
