"Mêkingu obu 'Ginî piggu'" or "Making of Guinea Pig" or "Guinea Pig Special 1" is a Japanese 44-minute documentary short film from 1986, so this one had its 30th anniversary. If you consider seeing this one, you have probably already seen some of the films that this "behind the scenes" film is based on. Of course, it is a lot lighter than the gore and violence in the movies as here we have many interviews with the cast and crew from start to finish and we also get to see the make-up artists during their work, which is maybe the most interesting part of the entire thing. I personally have some difficulties in really enjoying this one more than the films and it's pretty difficult to make a clean cut and appreciate this one and its information without really thinking of the movies. So yeah, if you like or even love the movies, then you will definitely enjoy this one here too. I myself was underwhelmed by both and it's also a bit strange to watch a making-of that is as long or even longer than the movie it is about. Thumbs-down from me. Not recommended. If you still want to see it, make sure you got subtitles unless you are fluent in Japanese.
... View More"Making of Guinea Pig" is a relatively entertaining affair which looks at the behind-the-scenes goings-on for the first three installments of this notorious series, "Devil's Experiment", "Flowers of Flesh and Blood" and "He Never Dies".We see the talented prosthetic effects men at work and there's an insight into the lengthy process involved in filming the more elaborate scenes.Despite the sombre atmosphere of some of the "Guinea Pig" films, it appears that there was a fun, "gung-ho" atmosphere on set. The unfortunate "victim" of "Flowers of Flesh and Blood," Kirara Yugao, is seen laughing as the effects guys prepare their next scene. If nothing else, the release of this documentary on DVD should dispel the rumours behind this project forever.A somewhat lightweight documentary, I'd give it a 6 out of 10.
