Low budget "Barbarella" knock-off manages to be watchable, but is nowhere as funny as it thinks it is. Dorothy Stratten plays the sexy robot Galaxina on a ship of space intergalactic cops patrolling the universe. While the crew is asleep, Galaxina reprograms herself to be more human. Romantic entanglements ensure. Later their ship is sent to recover a mysterious crystal on a planet that resembles the old west, which is a goofily entertaining of genre mash-up. The film mostly wants to operate as a sci-fi spoof of "Star Trek," "Alien," any number of other films in the vein of Mel Brooks, but it's nowhere as clever as Brooks or a Zucker/Abrams/Zucker parody film. Also, the film suffers from being too overt of a sex comedy, which worked much better in "Barbarella," where director Roger Vadim kept the film sexy but also somewhat innocent, where in "Galaxina" it just feels leering and creepy. Despite it's many deficiencies, Stratten demonstrates real star power in a ridiculous film, much like Jane Fonda in "Barbarella," and as bad as this film is, it did make me wish Stratten had gotten to make more films.
... View More"Galaxina" is a crappy low-budget sci-fi film...no way around that. Its only real standout feature is the movie's robot, Galaxina, which is played by the gorgeous and ill-fated Dorothy Stratten. If you don't recall, Stratten was the Playboy centerfold who was inexplicably murdered by her deranged husband...and it was brought to the big screen by the film "Star 80". Well, apart from a few TV appearances and movies, this is one of the only chances you'll find to see Stratten as an actress--though often the film gives her practically nothing to do as through more than half of the film she is mute. And, surprisingly, Stratten keeps her clothes on during the entire film!!Galaxina is a sexy robot aboard an intergalactic police vessel. She was not programmed to talk and shocks crew members who try to have their way with her! Why they would put this tempting thing aboard the ship, I have no idea. However when the crew is placed in suspended animation for 27 years, she decides to reprogram herself so that she can enjoy carnal pleasures with Sgt. Thor (Stephen Macht). Naturally, the Sergeant is VERY pleased with the reprogramming, but their love must wait as they land at their destination--a planet which is like the old west and "Star Wars" AND "Star Trek" combined! Is any of this worth seeing? No. The film is comedy and looks as if it was written by some 3rd graders. Some examples of this is naming the leader of the expedition 'Captain Butt' (Avery Schreiber), cursing and the copious bad jokes--none of which even approaches being funny or entertaining. If you're hoping to enjoy the film on a pornographic level, it's also a disappointment. Stratten is lovely to look at but has nothing in particular to do and the film is amazingly chaste. As for the sci-fi elements, the movie is a failure as it looks as if they project cost about $483.99 to make--with really awful makeup and effects. In particular, the orange planet not only looks bad but is horrible on your eyes. Overall, it's a horrible and incredibly stupid film with little, if anything, to provide interest.By the way, the look of horror on my wife's face as she watched this crap was priceless!!
... View MoreEverything can be done right, even if the resources needed are not always available. I also can understand that not everything works out as planned but this seems like a stretch. There is potential here but there just isn't enough effort to really call it even a movie. It tries its hardest to be a parody but that can't even be performed thoroughly either. So what's the problem? Practically everything, I only found one thing that was KIND OF funny. To get right to the point, the main reason why anyone would want to go see this movie is because it focuses on a character portrayed by a playboy model. That is it. Unless there are hardcore fans of the other unknown actors, there's a good chance there is no other reason. Here's where the main problem is - the writing. William Sachs, who wrote and directed this film, displays that his ability to produce a quality story has a low probability. There is no story here. It is not until a third of the way into the movie will the audience actually here about some kind of an objective; which felt like an eternity. The story (if that's what one would call it) is about a goofy space police crew who travel through space on a real dumb journey. In charge of the crew are Sgt. Thor (Stephen Macht) and Captain Cornelius Butt (Avery Schreiber), probably some of the worst character names ever made. And along with them is their, I guess pilot, Galaxina played by Dorothy Stratten. Weird thing is, the actual name "Galaxina" is a brand. Apparently every police squad is issued one. Hmmm...so doesn't that defeat the purpose of basing this movie off the main character? I thought the name was to represent a specific individual, not a company.Anything else beyond this point is just cheap effects, bad sound engineering, impossible logic, stolen music and a slew of other lame characters. The cheap effects belong to the silly lazer fights between people or space ships. The bad sound engineering belong to things like screeching tires being used for space ships making U-turns. Come on really? There's too much that belongs to impossible logic because there's way too much to go over. Can you believe this film doesn't even have a designated composer? That's because none of the music is original! If you watch this movie, any of the music being played already belongs to some other famous movie. Lastly, the lamest character in this movie is the villain. Just downright insulting. He sounds like a James Earl Jones' understudy that didn't make the cut.Now I know this movie is a sci-fi parody of sorts but nothing works. The small amount of slapstick that is injected does not leave a good impression and the acting isn't memorable either. Just because there's an actor mocking Spock called Mr. Spot, doesn't make it clever. Also having a bunch of space bikers worship a god named "Harlee David Son" is being extremely unoriginal. Even stranger is that there is an actual actor who plays a convincing robot and to be honest, I would have preferred seeing that actor portray Galaxina than Dorothy Stratten, who barely made herself look like a robot at all. This movie should only be seen if you want to waste time. Not only is this movie an insult to the sci-fi genre but it also creates a bad reputation for the parody genre. This is not even enjoyable on the worst level possible. Don't waste your time.
... View MoreAccording to the opening, "The year is 3008. Space travel is now routine. As new galaxies were explored and more civilizations discovered, the traffic in space increased. The United Intergalactic Federation was called upon to create a police force and soon a fleet of ships was patrolling the far reaches of the known star systems. This is the story of one of these ships police cruiser, number 308, the Infinity. It is also the story of the ship's crew and of the ship's robot. She was no ordinary robot for in the 31st century man finally created a machine with feelings, and her name is Galaxina." and "Galaxina" is played by Dorothy Stratten, famous for her wholesomely sexy nude spreads in "Playboy" magazine. She was also murdered by her mismanaging husband in 1980...The excellent "Star 80" (1983) covers Ms. Stratten's short-lived limelight exceptionally well. This film covers up most of her body and reveals no significant acting ability. Still, it's difficult to shine in this travesty and Stratten might have learned a successful screen persona. She does look sexier as the film drags on. It's mostly a spoof of "Star Trek" and "Star Wars" with a little "Alien" added to the mix. Also caught in the weak vehicle are cigar-smoking Stephen Macht (as Thor), blond cowboy James David Hinton (as Buzz) and "Doritos" pitchman Avery Schreiber (as Cornelius Butt).** Galaxina (6/6/80) William Sachs ~ Dorothy Stratten, Stephen Macht, James David Hinton, Avery Schreiber
