Flesh Eater (1988) * 1/2 (out of 4) A group of college students are out on a hayride and camping trip when a farmer lets loose a zombie (Bill Hinzman) who begins to kill them. As one is bitten they too become a zombie and soon this small town has a major problem on their hands.Hinzman, who plays the main zombie here, also directed this film and wrote the screenplay. He will always be best remembered for playing the cemetery zombie in the original NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD and it's easy to see why he decided to make his own zombie movie. After all, George Romero had just released DAY OF THE DEAD and John Russo had just been involved in THE RETURN OF THE LIVING DEAD. Needless to say, this film here isn't in the same league as those two but FLESH EATER is basically two things. The first thing is that this is a really, really awful movie. I mean, on a technical level the film is quite bad but it perfectly fits in with the countless other direct-to-VHS movies out there. There's really not a single good thing that can be said about the technical side of this thing as the cinematography is rather ugly, the music score annoying and the editing is some of the worst that you're going to see. The performances are all from amateurs and there are some very laughable moments at times. The second thing the film is is downright crazy. ZOMBIE MASSACRE would have been a better title because there's really no plot here and instead we just get non-stop zombie attack scenes. The special effects aren't the greatest that you're going to see but at the same time it's somewhat refreshing to see practical effects and especially in this day and age. There are plenty of gunshots to the head as well as flesh biting and blood dripping. Again, none of the effects are going to remind you of Tom Savini but they're good enough and there are plenty of them. There's no real flow to the picture as the story is just nothing and the editing is poor. Still, if you're a fan of NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD then it's mildly interesting seeing Hinzman return as a zombie. It's also interesting to note that there are several moments here clearly borrowed from the Romero movie. FLESH EATER certainly isn't a winner but it's so bad at times that it's mildly entertaining.

One fool unearths a grave that somehow triggers the dead in the area to come back to life. This first zombie out of the casket is none other than the original graveyard ghoul from "Night of the Living Dead" played by Bill Hinzman. Hinzman is also the Producer, Director, Co-Writer (along with Bill Randolph) and Editor of this film. He quickly pulls the heart out of the fool who woke him and infects others in gory fashion. The kids eventually catch on as their Halloween Hayride goes south. They scramble from farm to farm with the zombies taking them easily. I want to start by saying how much I love Bill Hinzman and everyone involved with George A. Romero's classic "Night of the Living Dead". With that said this movie is really awful. What might have been a fun low budget outing is sunk by lousy production values, non actors butchering poorly written lines, and bad scene after bad scene. Sure it's a kick seeing Hinzman reprise his role as the graveyard zombie and having this set on Halloween was a good idea. But the poor execution makes this seem like a video shot on a weekend with some friends. There is some cheesy gore but no scares or atmosphere to be found. Quite dismal to say the least.
... View MoreI had hoped to find a decent zombie film but with a title like "FleshEater" I honestly didn't expect too much. And that's a good thing because what I found was pretty much what I expected: A low budget zombie film with terrible acting, a very weak script, bad special effects and extremely bad performances by the zombies. In fact, some of the zombies were just plain comical when they were meant to be horrifying. And while there were some attractive young women involved, they had no character development and because everything else was so bad they were essentially wasted. In short, this was a very bad film and the only reason I don't give it an even lower score was because of the possibility that this might make a good Halloween film--provided there is a lot of beer on hand. Preferably not Iron City beer, but I suppose anything will do in this particular case.
... View MoreThere are so many zombie flicks out there nowadays but this one is well worth a screening. I rented this back in the day and it was titled Zombie Nosh! with a few cuts. Just bought the sucker uncut from a pound shop with its proper title. Anyhow the zombie from Night of the Living Dead (you know the first zombie in the cemetery at the beginning of the flick) stars as a recently dug up muncher. Some kids drink, smoke, and heavily pet each other when a cannibal zombie ruins the day. There are plenty of cool zombie attacks that impress even though of the low budget. The acting stinks but who cares we want zombie fodder and this one doesn't hold back. Admittedly its not up there with the Romereo or Boyle flicks but has plenty going for it like a fast pace, cool score and plenty of gory scenarios and real special effects not rubbish cgi. For zombie converts only non fans will not be impressed.
