Seeing the very poor rating this movie has on this site one might think this is just a piece of crap movie, just another straight to DVD filler that will never be remembered after its release, if it will ever be. You couldn't be more wrong. I think the poor notes most people give has only to do with the very uncomfortable subject of the movie, especially the infanticide aspect of it. You can even see that people say they like the movie only to be put down with the ending. surely people wanted a typical Hollywood ending where all family lived happy ever after. Even I, who really liked this picture, was left a bit shocked with the outcome; I wouldn't put a mother killing her child as a fairytale ending. Elizabeth Shue gives a brilliant performance as a postpartum depressed woman who becomes utterly psychotic. Steven Mackintosh should also be credited for his portrayal of a husband who doesn't know what to do, which would be the case of 99% of man. Great movie but not, in any shape or form,a feel good movie of the year. Come to think of it, if your wife or husband wants to have a baby, show them this film.

Very good suspense thriller, with Shue as an expectant mother, with an emotionally neglectful husband. An attorney from NYC, he moves the family to the suburbs, to an overly expansive house, where he leaves his wife and child. There are a few parallels here to "Rosemary's Baby" (i.e. the ambitious father-to-be, the mysterious Mrs. Casperian/nanny) and many threats seemingly aimed toward the child. There is also a textbook scene whereas, when Shue becomes unbalanced, she dyes and cuts her hair. Is this the only mechanism the director has to show discord in a female?.At any rate there is a scary twist at the end, and this is one suspense LMN movie which is quite different. Do not miss. 9/10.

No idea what the negative commentary is based upon--this movie scared heck out of my husband & me b/c it could've happened to anyone. Post partum psychosis is a real, terrifying condition which is little understood in the US. In the UK (where my husband's mother is from), there are special clinics & much awareness about this debilitating condition. It's obvious that the wife is going through this & her husband, who is busily trying to make enough $$ to support his small family & large house, misses clues. Steven MackIntosh is such a brilliant actor, he makes it look almost too easy in this role. See him in Prime Suspect, as the Moriarity figure to Jane Tennison's Sherlock. Then compare that role ("The Street") to this. You will be suitably impressed. Shue does a fantastic job of spiraling downward from together, gorgeous, bright dancer to the end, which I won't give away. And of COURSE her hair looked like S*** that was part of the spiral downward. AUGH! I hate when people just don't GET IT. The cinematography was brilliant. My husband & I (and friends) watch 3-5 movies a week, most recently this & Hitchcock's "Strangers on a Train."

OK well, I've just seen the movie. First I expected a lot from it, it had a promising beginning, dark and creepy paranoia stuff, my favs :) But at one point, I've lost it... And since I'm totally annoyed by this ignorance of mine, can PLEASE someone explain couple of things for me? I get it that the movie was based od PPD, but how exactly does that witchcraft woman fit in? And the ending, what the hell was that?!! Last I concluded (at least I thought I was on the right track) was that she bought that witchcraft book, 'fond out' that the lady was doing some kind of black magic over her and she got lost of that baby doll.I sincerely thought that the doll was the last piece of that voodoo crap and we'll have a happy ending. But what the hell happened when she buried that doll? And what happened to her, precisely- with her memory, brain or whatever...? I'm furious and I don't get it! So please, if anyone has a good and (more or less) logical version of the possible ending, it would help a lot :) Than U!!
