I really enjoyed and loved this film. Both a refreshing and thoughtful story, this film not only presents an original story but it engages us on many levels-something rare in many films today. I for one, not only welcome new ways of looking at the world through film but wholeheartedly support filmmakers who dare to show honesty and who work outside the box. Afterall is that not what art should do. This world is a complex and diverse place and this film gives us a view not often taken. Bravo! As well it is refreshing to see other family shapes represented in film. I loved the characters, the story, and the thinking!
... View MoreThis movie is so under-rated it's amazing. If Finn were a man, women would be all over this forum about how it was a touching story of love, grief and of course raising a child. Because it's a lesbian, married, Canadian couple it's different. Understandable, maybe, but seriously, the film comes out August 12, see it.Being Canadian myself, it's odd to dislike Canadian movies with the passion I do. Normally I can detect a Canadian movie a mile away, but I had no idea this one was Canadian until I heard Toronto mentioned. The dialogue is surprisingly smart, touching (but not in a cheesy clichéd way) and where appropriate, witty.Ritter does a fabulous job as Zelly and I cannot say enough about Brooke Johnson who played Finn. The movie deals with a widowed lesbian who was hit with what seems to be a quadruple whammy: she has full time custody of Zelly, Nancy's daughter, she run the abortion clinic Nancy founded, with that comes death threats and she's still working through the grief of loosing Nancy. But this movie is nothing overtly: it's not overtly a lesbian movie, there is only one brief well shot nude scene and it doesn't scream "My views are right!" It's quiet, everything unfolds naturally. And the plot twist at the end? Implausible yes, but I disagree with the people who have said it cheapens the movie. I think it left you with the feeling that Zelly and Finn were finally coming to peace with each other, and I do so love happy endings.Summary? See this movie, don't be scared off by the fact that it's a so-called lesbian movie. I'm not a lesbian and I found it very endearing in a not-cheesy-at-all sort of way. Give it a chance, you may be surprised as I was.
