Danny Deckchair Trailers

Based on a true story, the tale of a cement truck driver named Danny, whose long awaited vacation is cancelled thanks to his scheming girlfriend, Trudy. Danny escapes his grim life in suburban Australia and blasts into the skies in a chair tied with helium balloons. A mighty thunderstorm blows him clean off the map, and spits him out far away over the lush green town of Clarence. In this new town, he rockets into the world of Glenda, the town's only parking cop. While the media back home becomes obsessed with the story of his disappearance, Danny gets to reinvent himself in this new town, and in his great adventure, he discovers a true soul mate in Glenda. Fate catches up with him eventually, as Danny's true identity is revealed and Trudy--now a tabloid celebrity--comes to the idyllic town to claim Danny and drag him back to Sydney. Danny, however, is a changed man; he's discovered what it means to be happy and has found a new self-worth.

Danny Morgan (Rhys Ifans) works the cement truck. He can't wait for his trip but his girlfriend Trudy (Justine Clarke) cancels to meet local TV sports reporter Sandy Upman (Rhys Muldoon). After overhearing her calling him one of the "little people" and finding out that she lied to him about work, he sees her with Sandy and decides to tied a bunch of giant helium balloons to his deckchair during the BBQ. He lifts off by accident and gets blown far to the town of Clarence where he crash lands in Glenda Lake (Miranda Otto)'s tree. The deckchair trip is actually a small part of the movie. It turns into a rom-com. As such, it's somewhat limited. The rom part is nice but the com is generally light weight. I like Ifans and Otto together. They make a nice pair.

I can't see how anything I may say here would ever cause anyone to make up their mind as to watch this flick, but I just have to say... "Watch this movie"! It is NOT the greatest movie you'll ever watch, but gees Louise, it sure is really a good flick. You'll be smiling by the end.At the beginning, I honestly expected absolutely nothing from it because it was "just okay", but then it just got better and better (not mind blowing great, just better and better). It was a pleasant surprise that I now have watched tons of times. Maybe it'll be your cup of tea, maybe not. Then again, I like Planes, Trains, and Automobiles too, so.... Once again.... just watch this flick. It's really worth it.

One of the most agonizing script-writing shortcuts is to have a character go 180 degrees from one scene to the next, in one moment being full of love and affection and understanding, and then for whatever reason refusing to talk to the main character, rushing out rudely and refusing any explanation from the main character, in the most unreasonable way. You're not supposed to wonder why this person would do this, you're just supposed to feel the hurt and rejection. If you like these kinds of scenes, buy this movie. Everything about this movie is predictable, tries to be deep and meaningful, and proceeds on the assumption that you've never seen a movie before. An utter failure.

I wish we'd distribute more widely treasures from Canada, the UK, and Australia in the U.S. I had to dig to find this film for rental, but I am now looking into how I can purchase it for my library. The longing is an old one but the story is told in such a fresh and sometimes quirky new way that the viewer at once is struck by its freshness yet also experiences that shock of recognition by which all human experience is bound. The story, acting, directing - everything works superbly. I am now more a fan than ever of well told and portrayed stories about people relating to each other and their world to dig deeper to find the happiness that is possible for each of us.Thanks, mates, for a delightful film. Please keep them coming. You will love this film!
